... Read moreYou know, I used to think friendships were just about having fun, but as I've gotten older, I've realized just how deeply they impact my mental health. It's not always easy, but actively choosing people who uplift you and recognizing when a connection isn't serving you anymore, truly makes all the difference. The phrase 'Choose people who are good for your mental health' isn't just a catchy note; it's a profound truth I live by. One of the toughest lessons I've learned is about 'outgrowing friends.' It sounds harsh, doesn't it? Like you're dismissing someone. But sometimes, people just move in different directions, or a friendship that once nourished you starts to feel draining. I remember a few years ago, I had a friend who, while I loved them dearly, constantly brought negativity into every conversation. Every catch-up left me feeling exhausted and anxious. I'd dread their calls, and I realized I was spending more energy trying to cheer them up or deflect their complaints than enjoying our time together. It wasn't their fault, and it wasn't mine, but the dynamic had become unhealthy for my own mental space. Recognizing the signs was key: I felt an energy drain, there was a lack of reciprocity, and my values were starting to diverge significantly from theirs. It took a lot of courage, but I slowly started to create more distance. It wasn't a confrontational breakup; it was a gradual re-prioritization of my time and energy. I learned to say no to invitations that I knew would leave me depleted and focused on nurturing new friendships that aligned with where I was heading. It taught me that it’s okay to evolve, and sometimes, letting go of a friendship, even a long-standing one, is an act of self-care. It opens up space for connections that genuinely support your mental well-being. On the flip side, being a supportive friend is equally vital. I’ve been through tough times, and the friends who genuinely 'checked in' made all the difference. Now, I try to pay that forward. It's not about being a therapist, but simply showing you care. I've learned to spot subtle shifts: maybe a friend who's usually chatty suddenly goes quiet, or someone passionate about their hobbies loses interest. Sometimes they seem more irritable, or they cancel plans more often. When I notice these things, I don't jump to conclusions. Instead, I try to reach out gently. A simple text like, "Hey, just thinking of you, how are things going?" or "I've noticed you've been a bit quiet lately, everything okay?" can open the door. It’s about creating a safe space for them to share, without pressure. The most important thing I've found is to truly listen without judgment and validate their feelings. I don't offer unsolicited advice unless they ask for it. Sometimes, just knowing someone sees them and cares is enough. I might offer to go for a walk, grab a coffee, or just sit quietly with them. If it feels appropriate, I might gently suggest professional help, but only after listening and making sure they feel heard. Building a truly supportive circle means both choosing friends wisely for your own peace of mind and being that pillar of support for others when they need it most. It's a two-way street that ultimately enriches everyone's mental health journey.
