My personal turning point came when I realized I was constantly missing out on opportunities for myself because I was prioritizing others' needs. I'd cancel plans for my own growth to help a friend move for the fifth time, or take on extra work that wasn't mine because I couldn't say 'no.' It reached a point where I felt completely used and abused, not necessarily maliciously, but because I hadn't taught people how to treat me. I felt like I was always the one who gives, and the imbalance was exhausting. So, how do you actually stop being too nice without becoming mean or cold? It’s a journey, not a switch. One of the first things I learned was to practice saying 'no' to small things. Instead of a flat 'no,' you can start with phrases like, 'I appreciate you thinking of me, but I can't commit to that right now,' or 'My plate is full at the moment, but I wish you the best.' This helps you ease into setting healthy boundaries without feeling confrontational. Another crucial step is recognizing your own value and understanding that your time and energy are precious. If you don't value them, others won't either, and you risk never being truly respected. I started scheduling 'me time' and treating those appointments with myself as non-negotiable.
