Starting to save money while still in high school can be challenging but incredibly rewarding, as I learned through my own journey to save $12,000 before graduation. One key insight I discovered is how effective reselling platforms like Depop, Mercari, and Poshmark can be. I began by finding undervalued vintage and brand-name items at tag sales and thrift stores, buying them at low prices, and then reselling online with a smart markup. For instance, items like vintage Coach bags can be especially profitable if you buy them at a bargain and market them well. I earned between $50-$200 or more each time I hosted tag sales or sold online, which made a significant difference. Waitressing at a high-end restaurant was another excellent side hustle. It provided a steady income plus tips, some nights bringing in over $50 in tips alone. This experience also taught me critical interpersonal skills, time management, and the value of hard work. Starting at 16 gave me a head start compared to many peers, and it’s never too early to develop a strong work ethic. Once you have some savings, learning to make your money work for you is crucial. I opened multiple accounts, including high-yield savings and investment accounts, to grow my funds over time rather than letting them sit idle. Utilizing reputable financial institutions helped ensure security and growth, giving me peace of mind and motivation to keep saving. Reflecting on this journey, I encourage others to start young, explore multiple income streams, and take advantage of overlooked opportunities like tag sales. Combining hustle with smart financial habits can make even seemingly large goals achievable. If you have any financial tips or experiences, sharing them can be invaluable for students trying to build a strong financial foundation early on.
