No more doom scrolling

On average, people spend anywhere from 4-7+ hours a day on their phones. Donโ€™t get me wrong, I love my phone and all the things Iโ€™m able to do with it.

But I sat down and seriously thought about the amount of time I was spending on my phone, and if it was impacting positively. I realized that

my attention span is not what it used to be because of it, and I was using my phone as an escape to avoid my emotions and other responsibilities. I was spending so much time on my phone I was missing out on other things I like to do and not being present at all.

2024 I made a pact with myself to put down my phone and find other ways to spend my time. Now, I donโ€™t find myself feeling tempted to pick up my phone for a dopamine hit every 5 minutes; I can actually sit down and read (and finish!) books now, I spend way more time outside and exercising, and have picked up other hobbies I enjoy such as coloring and doing puzzles. Phones are great, but donโ€™t let them completely take over your life!

... Read moreIt's so easy to get caught in the endless scroll, isn't it? I totally get it. For a long time, my phone was my default for escaping boredom or stress, and before I knew it, hours had vanished. The good news is, breaking free from doom scrolling isn't about giving up your phone entirely, but about finding fulfilling alternatives that truly enrich your life. If you're looking for practical ways to replace that urge to pick up your phone, here are some things that have genuinely helped me, building on what I shared earlier: 1. Dive into a Good Book: This was a game-changer for my attention span. Instead of mindlessly swiping, I now find myself genuinely immersed in stories. Start with a genre you love, or try a short story collection if you're new to reading. I even joined a local book club, which adds a social element! 2. Embrace the Outdoors: "SPEND TIME OUTSIDE" sounds simple, but it's incredibly powerful. It doesn't have to be a big hike. Sometimes, it's just a 15-minute walk around the block, noticing the trees or the sky. I also love finding quiet spots in a park to journal or simply observe nature. The fresh air and change of scenery do wonders for clearing my head. 3. Get Creative with Your Hands: Beyond just coloring, which is incredibly meditative, Iโ€™ve found joy in baking! Thereโ€™s something so satisfying about creating something delicious from scratch. From simple cookies to trying new bread recipes, "BAKE!" has become a delightful way to spend an afternoon. Similarly, "LEARN TO COOK" a new dish from a different cuisine can be a fun challenge and a treat for your taste buds. 4. Prioritize Self-Care & Connection: We often scroll when we're neglecting our own needs. Schedule dedicated "DO SOME SELF CARE" time โ€“ whether it's a relaxing bath with essential oils, a face mask, or even just 10 minutes of quiet meditation. What about "TAKE YOURSELF ON A DATE"? I started doing this, and itโ€™s surprisingly refreshing! It could be visiting a local museum, trying a new coffee shop, or catching a matinee movie solo. It helps you reconnect with yourself and your surroundings without the pressure of an agenda. 5. Move Your Body: My "WORKOUT" routine has evolved from feeling like a chore to being a source of energy. Experiment with different types of movement โ€“ yoga, dancing, strength training, or even just stretching. Find what feels good for your body. 6. Challenge Your Mind: Instead of consuming endless content, try to "TAKE A CLASS/LEARN SOMETHING NEW." I've signed up for a beginner's pottery class and even started learning basic Spanish online. This kind of active learning is so much more rewarding than passive scrolling. To really make these changes stick, I've found it helpful to set small boundaries. For instance, I keep my phone out of the bedroom, and I have specific "no-phone" times, like during meals or when I'm reading. It's a journey, not a destination, but every small step away from the screen opens up a world of possibilities.
