Weird animal

Some people guessed it's possibly a badger or a coatimundi. Mohave County Arizona. definitely not a possum like I first thought. 😱

Watch the way he turns and looks at my camera, .like he's looking through me lol. Scared the crap out of me. 🤣

... Read moreOh my gosh, I totally get that feeling! Arizona's desert and mountain regions are full of incredible wildlife, and sometimes, you spot something that just throws you for a loop. Your encounter in Mohave County sounds exactly like the kind of mystery that keeps us talking! I've had my own share of 'What was that?!' moments, and trying to identify an unknown creature can be both thrilling and a little unnerving. Arizona truly is a hotspot for unique critters, and what seems 'weird' often depends on where you're from. For instance, many visitors are surprised by javelinas, which look a bit like wild pigs but are actually peccaries. Then there are ringtails, sometimes called 'miner's cats,' which are related to raccoons but have these incredibly long, banded tails. Badgers, like the one suggested for your sighting, are stout, powerful diggers. Coatimundis, another great guess, are super agile and have long, pointed snouts and tails that they often hold upright. Each of these can look pretty unusual if you're not familiar with them! When you encounter an animal you can't quite place, getting a good look (from a safe distance, of course!) is key. Try to notice specific details: What's its size compared to something familiar, like a house cat or a dog? What color is its fur? Does it have a distinctive tail, ears, or snout? Was it moving fast or slow? Was it nocturnal or active during the day? Even the way it moves can provide clues. For example, badgers have a distinctive waddle, while coatis are very agile climbers. This is where your camera comes in super handy, even if you're a bit spooked! Getting a clear photo or, even better, a video, can make all the difference. I've seen so many amazing wildlife identifications happen online thanks to people sharing their footage. Platforms like YouTube or YouTube Shorts are incredible resources. You can upload your video, share it with wildlife communities, and often get help from experts or fellow enthusiasts who know the local fauna inside out. Just make sure the video is as steady and clear as possible, even if your hands are shaking from the excitement (or fear!). Mentioning the exact location, like Mohave County, is also super helpful for others to narrow down possibilities. Of course, while it's amazing to observe wildlife, safety should always be your top priority. Always maintain a respectful distance – never approach or try to feed a wild animal, especially one you can't identify. If an animal seems distressed, injured, or unusually aggressive, it's best to contact local animal control or a wildlife rescue rather than trying to intervene yourself. They have the expertise and equipment to handle the situation safely for both the animal and people. It's these unexpected encounters that make living in or visiting Arizona so special. Every rustle in the bushes or strange shadow can hold a new discovery. Keep your eyes peeled, your camera ready, and continue sharing those awesome, mysterious moments – that's how we all learn more about the incredible creatures sharing our world!
