Rules Spotlight: Ninjutsu

There’s something so satisfying about returning an unblocked attacker to hand and suddenly dropping a powerful Ninja onto the battlefield, ready to strike! I remember the first time I saw it in action, completely changing the game state in an instant. It’s not just flashy; understanding its nuances can give you a serious edge. So, what exactly is Ninjutsu? At its heart, Ninjutsu is an activated ability that allows you to swap an unblocked attacking creature you control with a Ninja card from your hand. You reveal the Ninja card, return the unblocked attacker to your hand, and then put the Ninja onto the battlefield, tapped and attacking. The cost is usually a specific amount of mana. The beauty is, this can happen any time after attackers are declared and before blockers are. It's a fantastic way to bypass defenses and get unexpected damage or effects through. One common question I often hear is, 'Is Ninjutsu considered casting a spell?' The answer is no! When you activate Ninjutsu, you're not casting the creature spell; you're putting the creature onto the battlefield via an ability. This means it bypasses 'counter target spell' effects, which is a huge advantage. Also, yes, Ninjutsu IS an activated ability, which is important for interactions with cards that care about activated abilities. This ability does use the stack – that means opponents can respond to the Ninjutsu ability itself, for example, by removing the unblocked creature before the swap happens. Timing is everything! This mechanic truly shines in Commander, especially with legendary Ninjas like Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow. Yuriko turns every successful Ninjutsu into direct life loss for your opponents and card advantage for you – it's incredibly potent! Another great example is Biting-Palm Ninja, which enters with a menace counter and can strip a nonland card from an opponent's hand. When building a Ninja Commander deck, you'll want to include plenty of cheap, evasive creatures to get those initial attacks in, enabling your Ninjutsu. Think about cards with flying, unblockable, or even just low power creatures that opponents won't bother blocking. Don't forget ways to draw cards and return your own creatures to hand voluntarily to maximize your Ninjutsu opportunities. It’s all about creating a consistent stream of unblocked attacks to keep the pressure on. Remember, Ninjutsu can be declared during various combat steps if creatures remain unblocked – after blockers are declared, after combat damage, or even at the end of combat, as long as the creature is still unblocked and attacking. This flexibility allows for some truly surprising plays. Mastering Ninjutsu isn't just about knowing the rules; it's about understanding the timing and how to leverage it for maximum impact.
