Vren, the Relentless and Sacrifice Effects

... Read moreHey everyone! As a fellow MTG player, I've been diving deep into the mechanics of Vren, the Relentless, and let me tell you, this legendary Rat Rogue from Murders at Karlov Manor is a fascinating commander to build around! If you're looking to understand how to maximize his unique abilities, especially his exile and sacrifice interactions, you're in the right place. First off, Vren’s Ward 2 ability is a solid layer of protection, making him harder for opponents to target with spells and abilities. They'll have to pay an extra two generic mana, which can often deter removal early on. But the real meat of Vren’s power lies in his two other abilities. His first unique effect states: “If a creature an opponent controls would die, exile it instead.” This is a powerful replacement effect that completely bypasses graveyard triggers for your opponents. No more pesky 'death triggers' from their creatures, and it shuts down reanimation strategies cold. I've found this to be incredibly disruptive in games, especially against decks that rely on creatures hitting the graveyard. It means those creatures get sent to the 'exile zone' instead of the graveyard. Then, at the beginning of each end step, Vren really shines. He creates X 1/1 black Rat creature tokens, where X is the number of creatures your opponents controlled that were exiled this turn. And here’s the kicker: other Rat creatures you control get +1/+1 for each other Rat you control. This isn't just about creating tokens; it's about building a formidable Rat army that gets stronger with each creature exiled! Imagine exiling just a couple of creatures, and suddenly you have a few 1/1 Rats that quickly become 3/3 or 4/4 thanks to the anthem effect. When it comes to building a Vren, the Relentless Commander deck, I focus on a few key synergies. You'll want ways to consistently exile your opponents' creatures. This could be through combat, but also through removal spells that exile, like Path to Exile or Swords to Plowshares. While Vren himself exiles, having other options is crucial. Even though Vren exiles, cards with sacrifice payoffs are still incredibly strong for your own creatures or for controlling the board. For instance, cards like Mortician Beetle (which I saw a cool image of recently!) can grow huge if you’re sacrificing your own creatures for value, or if your opponents are sacrificing theirs. Although Vren doesn't directly cause your opponents to sacrifice, having sacrifice outlets for your own board helps you manage your resources and trigger other effects. Another strategy I love is leaning into the Rat tribal aspect. Vren makes your Rats bigger, so including other strong Rat creatures like Pack Rat or Piper of the Swarm can create an overwhelming board presence. Cards that care about a high creature count or go-wide strategies also pair well. Finally, don't forget about the lore and art! Vren’s artwork is truly captivating, embodying his "relentless" nature. He's a character with a rich backstory in the MTG universe, tying into the themes of stealth and cunning often associated with Rats. Understanding the flavor really enhances the play experience. I've personally found that playing Vren requires a balance of removal and token generation, constantly adapting to the board state. It’s a blast to see your Rat army swell and overpower your opponents!
