... Read moreWhen writing dialogue, it’s tempting to have characters simply explain important plot points or background information directly to each other. However, this often feels unnatural and can disengage readers. From my experience, subtlety is key. Instead of characters stating facts they both know, try to reveal information indirectly—through what they choose not to say, their reactions, or the context surrounding their words. For example, in a mystery or suspense story, having a character hint at their worries, or react uneasily as a topic comes up, can be far more compelling than an outright statement like “Your sister has been missing a week.” This method keeps the dialogue realistic and maintains tension. Another useful approach is to let the setting or actions supplement dialogue. Situations where characters act on incomplete knowledge, or where their behaviors contradict their words, encourage readers to infer meaning. This engages the audience actively and makes the story richer. Practice listening to real conversations or reading well-crafted dialogue in novels and scripts to notice how people naturally exchange information. Usually, people don’t just state facts plainly; they imply, suggest, or avoid topics. Bringing this nuance into your writing elevates your dialogue from mere exposition to authentic interaction. By resisting the urge to over-explain and focusing on conveying meaning through natural, subtle dialogue, you not only avoid slowing down the story but also deepen character development and reader engagement.
