✍️🏽Writing Tip 101: Let Conflict Do the Heavy Lifting

💡 Great stories aren’t driven by events—they’re driven by conflicting goals, values, and choices.

TRY IT: For your next scene, ask: What does my character want-and what stands in the way? Raise the cost of getting what they want, and watch the tension rise.

... Read moreWhen writing a story, I've found that letting conflict take center stage not only keeps readers hooked but also deepens characters and their journeys. Instead of just listing events, I try to focus on what each character wants and the obstacles they face. For example, a weak conflict might be a character wanting to win a contest but feeling nervous — it reveals internal emotions but lacks weight. However, when I raise the stakes—such as the contest offering a scholarship that could change the character’s life but forcing her to compete against someone she cares about—the tension feels more real and impactful. I encourage writers to challenge their characters by increasing the cost of their goals. Ask: What sacrifices are needed? What values will be compromised? This approach transforms scenes into compelling moments of tension and emotional conflict that propel the story forward. Practically, before writing a scene, I jot down what my character desperately wants and what stands in the way, then brainstorm how to make that obstacle harder or more painful. Integrating this strategy has improved my storytelling significantly because it invites readers to empathize deeply with characters’ dilemmas. It’s these conflicting goals, values, and choices that transform a simple event into an unforgettable story. Remember, conflict isn’t just about action; it’s about the meaningful struggle behind it. For those looking to sharpen their craft, focusing on strong, layered conflicts can be a game-changer.
