Ever been out in your garden or on a nature walk and spotted a truly mesmerizing flower, only to wonder, “What flower is this?” I know the feeling! It happens to me all the time, especially when I'm catching glimpses of our buzzing bees at work. There's just something so satisfying about connecting a name to a beautiful bloom. I've been spending some time observing the incredible variety of flowering colors right in my own backyard, and I wanted to share a little bit about what I've seen and some tips I use for identification! First, let's talk about those majestic sunflowers. I've been captivated by their different shades – from the classic yellow sunflower with its large, developing seed head to the more unique reddish-orange sunflower and even a deep maroon or dark red variety. Each one has that distinct dark center, which isn't just beautiful but also a runway for our pollinator friends! I've watched fuzzy bees, absolutely covered in yellow pollen, diligently working away, clinging to the rich petals. Seeing their fuzzy bodies and delicate wings up close, deep within the flower's center, truly makes you appreciate their vital role. Then there are the zinnias, which bring such a burst of vibrant color to the garden. I've seen bright orange zinnias with their numerous layers of rich orange petals, and stunning pink zinnias where the fuzzy bees are equally busy. They often have a textured pink and yellow center that's just begging for a closer look. These flowers, along with others like the vibrant red and yellow flower I saw – possibly a Rudbeckia – really show off nature's incredible palette. So, how do I try to figure out “What flower is this?” when I'm stumped? Here are a few things I look for: Petal Power: Observe the shape, number, and arrangement of the petals. Are they broad and flat like some sunflowers, or multi-layered like many zinnias? Do they have a striking gradient of colors, or are they a solid hue like the orange-brown sunflower I spotted? Center Stage: The center of the flower is often a huge clue! Is it a prominent dark center, a textured yellow and orange center, or something else entirely? Bees often congregate here, so it’s easy to get a good look. Leaf Clues: While not always visible in a quick glance, the shape, size, and arrangement of the leaves can be very distinctive. Are they broad at the base of the flower like some sunflowers, or slender? Pollinator Activity: Sometimes, what kind of bee or insect is visiting can give you a hint about the flower, too! Those busy, fuzzy bees are attracted to specific types of blooms. It’s amazing how much you can learn just by taking a moment to observe.
