Sensory Bin Hack

I keep most of my sensory bins in tubs so they can move to where kids need them depending on the day, the activity, and the needs of the kid. This year I used a blow up pool thinking storage would be easier. For the new year I’ll go back to the plastic pool. The blow up pool kept going flat.

... Read moreSensory bins are valuable tools in early childhood education and therapy, especially for toddlers and children with autism. Using sensory bins helps stimulate sensory development, improve fine motor skills, and provide calming sensory breaks. However, controlling the mess created by sensory materials like rice or beans is a common challenge. A highly effective hack is to place sensory bins inside larger containers that can catch spills and make clean-up easier. The article highlights two popular options: plastic tubs and baby pools. Plastic tubs are durable and maintain shape, while blow-up pools offer portability but may have issues such as deflating, which can disrupt play and storage efficiency. Many educators and parents find that a sturdy plastic baby pool is optimal for containing sensory materials. It provides ample space for children to explore sensory items without spreading them across the floor. It’s especially useful for tactile materials like beans and rice that tend to scatter. Ensuring the sensory bin is mobile helps adapt to different learning environments and children’s needs during the day. Whether for sensory breaks, developmental play, or autism-focused activities, the right container facilitates both engagement and easy clean-up. Additional tips include using hashtags like #toddler sensory, #sensorybreak, and #sensorybin to connect with communities sharing sensory play ideas. Teacher tricks on managing sensory activities often focus on balancing fun with maintaining an orderly space. Integrating sensory bins into educational routines requires thoughtful storage solutions to maximize their benefits. By investing in reliable containment—such as plastic pools—parents and teachers can enhance sensory play effectiveness while reducing stress related to mess and storage.
