Cosmo School - Update✨

I’m almost done with the whole class registration process, but I still need to keep an eye on my school email so I know when I can buy my books and kit. I’m also trying to figure out how I’m gonna get the money for all the other school supplies and it’s really stressing me out right now.

On another note, I’ve been feeling pretty discouraged lately, especially knowing how many hairstylists struggle to make a steady living. I knew that going in when I first started looking into cosmetology school, but these past two weeks have really made me question whether I want to spend years struggling financially, emotionally, and physically. And on top of that, getting good health insurance as an independent stylist can be expensive.

The things I am excited about are having my own schedule, meeting like-minded people (who like anime, manga, gaming) once I niche down, being able to dress how I want, and learning everything I can about hair. I’m trying to stay positive, but it’s tough when I think about wanting to give my child the childhood I never had.

... Read moreIt's so validating to hear someone else experiencing the same rollercoaster of emotions and challenges in cosmetology school. I remember my own journey, feeling that mix of immense excitement and crippling anxiety. You're not alone in stressing over how to afford all the supplies and kits – it feels like a never-ending list, doesn't it? Beyond tuition, the hidden costs really add up, from textbooks to specialized tools, and it can be a huge mental load trying to budget for it all while focusing on your studies. The discouragement you mentioned about the financial stability of hairstylists hits home for so many of us. It’s a common fear, especially when you start looking at the reality of building a clientele from scratch or the initial meager earnings as a new stylist. It's a journey, not a sprint, and there will be times when you question if you’ve made the right choice, even after your Cosmetology School Orientation Day. The thought of being an independent stylist is empowering, offering that freedom of schedule you crave, but it also comes with the responsibility of managing your own income fluctuations and, yes, that daunting task of securing good health insurance. It’s definitely a significant hurdle that isn't always talked about enough during initial school presentations. But let's not forget those things that keep us going! Meeting like-minded people who share your passions – whether it’s for anime, manga, or gaming, like you mentioned – is such a powerful motivator. Building that community within your chosen niche can provide both emotional support and future networking opportunities. And the freedom to express yourself through your work and your style? That's priceless. Learning everything about hair, mastering techniques, and seeing the transformation you can create is incredibly rewarding. To tackle some of these challenges head-on, I found it helpful to start researching financial aid options specifically for cosmetology students, or even local grants and scholarships. For covering supplies, sometimes schools have programs, or you can find second-hand kits to save some money initially. As for the long-term financial worries, connecting with established independent stylists can offer invaluable insights into how they managed their early careers and built a stable income. Many successful stylists started exactly where you are, facing the same doubts. They can share practical advice on pricing services, marketing themselves, and even navigating health insurance options for small business owners or freelancers. Professional associations often offer group rates or resources for members. And your desire to give your child the childhood you never had? That's a beautiful, powerful driving force. Use that as your anchor when doubts creep in. This career path, despite its challenges, offers incredible flexibility once you're established, which can be a huge bonus for a parent. It allows for creative expression and the potential for a very fulfilling life, both personally and professionally. Keep focusing on the skills you're gaining, the community you're building, and the future you're actively creating for yourself and your family. Every challenge you overcome is just making you stronger and more resourceful. You've got this!
