The Best Shepherd’s Pie Ever!!😋😋
Y’all I made the best shepherd’s pie! I was not having a very good day and was feeling something delicious and comforting. I looked in my fridge and had potatoes and ground beef, and said why not I haven’t made it in a hot minute.
*Ground Beef*
Butter
2lb of ground beef
1tablespoon of minced garlic
1/2 of a diced onion
can of carrots (drain it)
Can of peas (drain it)
Seasonings I used (garlic powder, black pepper, salt, or season with whatever your heart desires)
1tablespoon tomato paste
1/2cup red wine I used Cabernet🤷🏻♀️
1/2 cup of beef stock
1. In your pan put some butter in it and let it heat up @medium heat
2. toss your diced onion and garlic let it become translucent
3. Toss your meat in there & let it cook, go ahead and season it with whatever you want
4. Add the tomato paste and mix it until it’s combined with the meat
5. Add your red wine and beef stock. Stir it until it’s all combined and let it reduce.
6. Then you add your canned peas and carrots(make sure you cut the carrots into small pieces) you can use fresh carrots and peas but I had cans and I wanted to get rid of them.
7. Now that it’s good to go you can layer it on the bottom of a baking dish I used one that was 13x11.
*Mash Potatoes*
1. Boil some potatoes (I used About 10 potatoes cutting them into small cubes)
2. Add chicken bouillon or salt to the water.
3. When they are soft and done mash them in a bowl.
4. Add heavy whipping cream, 1stick of butter, 4oz shredded mozzarella cheese, garlic powder and season with whatever you want for taste.
5. Layer on top of the meat and make sure it’s even and smooth. ( I used a fork to make lines across from it to make it even)
6. Oven should be at 400 degrees and bake for 20minutes
7. I like mine crispy so I put it on broil 425 degrees for 5minutes😁 but keep an eye on it!
8. Enjoy!! 😋😋
Shepherd’s pie is a timeless comfort food classic that combines a savory meat filling with creamy mashed potatoes on top, baked to golden perfection. To elevate your homemade shepherd’s pie, consider using some additional ingredients and techniques to add depth and richness to each layer. Start with the ground beef base, which acts as the main flavor carrier. The recipe’s use of garlic, diced onion, tomato paste, and red wine (Cabernet in this case) creates a rich and aromatic sauce that enhances the meat’s flavor. Using beef stock alongside red wine allows the sauce to reduce into a thick and flavorful gravy. For extra umami, you can add Worcestershire sauce or a splash of soy sauce. Fresh carrots and peas can be substituted for canned ones to add a firmer texture and fresher taste, but canned vegetables work well for convenience and to reduce waste. The mashed potatoes topping plays a crucial role in the dish’s comforting feel. Boiling potatoes cut into small cubes helps them cook evenly and mash more smoothly. Adding heavy whipping cream and a stick of butter creates a rich, velvety texture, while shredded mozzarella cheese introduces a mild, melty cheesiness to the topping. You can also consider adding grated cheddar or Parmesan for a sharper flavor. A sprinkle of garlic powder seasons the potatoes, but fresh minced garlic or chives can be used for a fresher taste. Using a fork to create ridges on the mashed potatoes helps the top crisp up and brown nicely when baked. Baking the assembled shepherd’s pie at 400 degrees for 20 minutes ensures the flavors meld and the filling bubbles nicely. Finishing with a broil at 425 degrees for 5 minutes creates a beautifully golden and slightly crispy crust, elevating the eating experience by adding texture contrast. For those days when you need a cozy, satisfying meal, this shepherd’s pie recipe is perfect. It’s flexible—feel free to adjust seasonings based on what you prefer. The use of red wine might feel fancy, but it adds a nice acidity and depth to balance the richness of beef. This dish also reheats well, making it great for leftovers that taste even better the next day. Overall, this shepherd’s pie recipe delivers on both flavor and comfort, making it ideal as a family dinner or a cheery meal when you need a pick-me-up. Don’t hesitate to personalize it with your favorite herbs, vegetables, or cheese, and enjoy the hearty satisfaction that only a perfect shepherd’s pie can bring!
