📖 How to Make Inferences in English Reading?

First, let’s talk about what inference is. Inference means 推测 ing unstated content based on clues in the story. Take the example in the picture: from “He concentrated on keeping his heart from singing out loud with joy,” we can infer that Rob was extremely happy to stay at home. Isn’t that amazing?

So how to make inferences? A great method is to combine clues in the text, what you know, and the questions you have. This way, you can more accurately infer the meaning that the author didn’t state explicitly.

It’s also important to distinguish between observation and inference. Observation refers to what can be directly seen or heard, such as a clown having a big smile; while inference is a conclusion drawn based on evidence and reasoning, such as a monster looking like it’s going to eat someone.

Here are some tips for making inferences: you can use charts, titles, and pictures to infer, and also understand difficult words through explanatory texts. When making inferences, remember to express your thoughts with “I think” and combine textual clues with background knowledge.

Finally, inferences should avoid random guesses and must be based on existing information. If a conclusion is not supported by facts, you need to rethink and see if you need to change your mind or consider more factors.

... Read moreWhen learning to make inferences, one helpful approach is to practice regularly with different types of texts such as stories, articles, and dialogues. For example, noticing small details like characters’ emotions or settings can provide clues that aren’t explicitly explained. Additionally, try engaging with charts, images, and titles as these often offer important hints. A personal tip is to always start your inference sentences with phrases like “I think” or “It seems,” which helps clarify that you’re making a reasoned guess rather than stating facts. Also, avoid jumping to conclusions without supporting evidence from the text. If an inference doesn’t quite fit, revisit the clues or gather more context. Using the OCR content from the images can reinforce the difference between observation and inference: while observations are straightforward facts you see, such as "The clown has a big smile," inferences require reasoning, like "The clown is happy." Practicing this mindfully improved my critical reading skills over time. Finally, don’t be afraid to ask questions when reading—what might the author imply but not say directly? This curiosity drives deeper thinking and makes reading more rewarding. Incorporating these methods can greatly enhance your understanding and enjoyment of English texts.
