Microplastics have become an invisible but pervasive part of our daily lives. From my own experience and research, I’ve learned that even paying close attention to what we eat and drink doesn’t guarantee we avoid these tiny plastic particles. For instance, purified spring water bottled in plastic can contain over 240,000 microplastic particles per liter—a staggering amount that makes you reconsider that simple bottle of water. One surprising source is plastic tea bags. Each brew can release billions of microplastic particles into your drink, which is something most tea lovers don’t know. After noticing this, I switched to loose leaf teas with metal strainers to reduce plastic intake. Seafood is another major contributor because fish and shellfish absorb plastics from polluted oceans. Eating seafood therefore transfers microplastics directly into your body. Avoiding seafood entirely or choosing sustainably sourced options seemed essential after learning this. Even canned foods aren’t safe; the plastic linings inside cans degrade over time, leaking harmful chemicals into your meals. Cooking and storing food in plastic containers can also cause plastic to melt slightly, especially when heated, contaminating your food further. Using plastic cutting boards adds more plastic particles to your meals as you chop, and I personally switched to wooden boards to minimize this effect. Lastly, it was shocking to discover research showing that 90% of table salt brands tested worldwide contain microplastics, meaning this contamination is nearly unavoidable. These insights made me more conscious about checking product labels and choosing alternatives such as glass or metal containers, fresh produce over canned goods, and reducing packaged foods. While completely avoiding microplastics is currently difficult, increasing awareness and making small lifestyle changes can reduce exposure significantly.
