... Read moreHey everyone! Building on my earlier post about my sacred skull tributes to Odin and Freya, I wanted to dive a little deeper into why these deities resonate so strongly with me and the rich symbolism behind these pieces. It's more than just art; it's a profound connection to ancient wisdom and personal spirituality.
Odin, the Allfather, is a complex deity of wisdom gained through sacrifice, magic (Seidr), war, and poetry. He's often depicted as a seeker of knowledge, always striving to understand the mysteries of the cosmos. Freya, a goddess of the Vanir, is equally multifaceted – associated with love, beauty, fertility, war, and witchcraft (also Seidr). She leads a host of valiant warriors to Folkvangr, her own hall in the afterlife. They share a profound connection, often seen together in lore, and both are deeply tied to aspects of death and the afterlife, guarding souls in different realms. For me, honoring them together represents a balance of wisdom, raw power, fierce love, and the eternal cycles of life and death.
The deer skulls I use as tributes are incredibly powerful symbols. In many spiritual traditions, skulls represent mortality, transformation, and the ancestral realm. They connect us to the wild, to nature's cycles, and to the wisdom passed down through generations. Adorning them with runes like Fehu adds another layer of intention. Fehu, often associated with wealth, cattle, and new beginnings, can also symbolize the raw, primal energy of creation and prosperity – something I feel both Odin and Freya embody in their own ways. The intricate wrapping on the antlers, whether it’s silver wire on a white skull or brown material on a black skull, is my way of weaving intention and aesthetic beauty into these sacred objects, making them truly unique offerings. The black markings on the forehead and nose also add to their mystique and individual character.
The idea of 'reincarnation,' especially concerning deities like Odin, is a fascinating one. While traditional Norse myths don't speak of Odin literally reincarnating, the concept of cycles, renewal, and the enduring spirit of the gods is very present. For many modern practitioners, honoring figures like Odin and Freya isn't just about ancient history; it's about connecting with their archetypal energies that continue to influence the world. It’s about recognizing their wisdom and power in our lives today, perhaps seeing reflections of their lessons in new forms or experiences. It's less about a literal rebirth of the god himself and more about the continuous flow of their influence and the cyclical nature of existence and spiritual evolution within the broader cosmos.
Creating these tribute pieces on my gray furry surface is a deeply meditative and personal ritual for me. It's not just about crafting; it's about pouring my devotion and intention into each detail. If you feel drawn to create your own offerings, I encourage you to explore symbols that resonate with *you*. Whether it's a simple altar, a piece of art, or even just a moment of quiet contemplation, the most important thing is the heartfelt connection you forge. These skulls, with their wrapped antlers and chosen runes, serve as powerful focal points for my devotion, reminding me daily of the continuous presence and guidance of Odin and Freya in my spiritual journey.
