My recent pilgrimage to the Oblate Renewal Center in San Antonio was an unexpectedly profound experience, truly a spiritual oasis that I feel compelled to share. Nestled at 5700 & 5712, this center offers a serene escape, a place where one can truly find solace and a sense of personal renewal amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life. One of the first places that captivated me was the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes. Walking towards it, I felt an immediate sense of calm. The statue of the Virgin Mary, adorned with fresh flowers and flickering blue candles, stands gracefully on a rock base beneath a large, ancient tree. It’s a beautiful, contemplative spot, perfect for quiet prayer or simply sitting in peaceful reflection. Even if you're not deeply religious, the sheer tranquility and natural beauty of the grotto are incredibly moving. It’s a place that invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and just *be*. Further into the grounds, I was deeply touched by Timothy P. Schmalz’s powerful outdoor sculpture, 'The Last Supper.' It's not just a statue; it's an immersive experience. The bronze sculpture of Jesus breaking bread, with a chalice and plate, is set on a stone table outdoors, surrounded by trees and stone block seats. I sat there, captivated, reflecting on the quote from 1 Corinthians 11:24 etched on the nearby black plaque. It brought a profound sense of connection to a sacred moment. Seeing a woman reaching out to touch the hands of the sculpture, and another with hands clasped in prayer, really underscored the personal impact this artwork has on visitors. It's a visual sermon, inspiring contemplation on faith and community. The center also pays homage to its rich history with a bronze plaque titled 'THE CAVALRY OF CHRIST,' describing the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate's work since 1816 and their preaching in South Texas since 1849. There’s even a bronze relief sculpture depicting three men on horseback, a powerful symbol of their enduring mission. These historical markers add another layer of depth to the visit, connecting the present serenity with a legacy of spiritual dedication. Beyond the specific sites, the overall atmosphere of the Oblate Renewal Center and Tepeyac de San Antonio is one of profound peace. The outdoor garden, with its tiered stone fountain encircled by low stone walls and various plants, is meticulously maintained and provides countless spots for quiet contemplation. I spent a good amount of time just walking the grounds, enjoying the fresh air and the gentle sounds of nature.
