For the next 12 days, I’m sharing the names of LGBTQ+ figures who changed the world.
Many were denied recognition.
Some are still denied a place in history books.
This isn’t for likes.
This is a reminder:
We have always been here.
We have always fought back.
And no matter how hard they try to erase us, our truth remains.
So today, I bring you a name that should’ve been remembered, but too often isn’t.
Rita Hester.
Before the vigils.
Before the annual hashtags.
Before the candles flickered in windowpanes and city streets…
There was Rita.
She was a Black trans woman living out loud in Boston in the 90s
Smart, magnetic, joyful, and deeply loved by her community.
She dared to be visible in a time that punished you for it.
And on November 28, 1998, she paid the price.
Rita was found in her apartment, stabbed over twenty times.
The violence was unspeakable.
The coverage was worse: reporters misgendered her, mocked her, reduced her to nothing.
And yet, from that tragedy, something powerful rose.
Her friends and neighbors organized.
They refused to let her name disappear.
That protest became the first Transgender Day of Remembrance.
And still… few people know the name that sparked it.
We gather every November.
We light candles.
We mourn the dead.
But do we remember Rita?
Today, I do.
Because she was the beginning.
She was the reason we look back at all.
No one was ever arrested.
No one was held accountable.
And yet the world kept spinning, like she was never here.
But she was.
She mattered.
She still does.
Say her name with me.
Rita Hester.
Because remembrance is resistance.
And silence was never an option
