Europe
2025/5/31 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, fellow adventurers, let's talk packing! When I first started roaming Europe, I quickly learned that what you bring (and how you bring it) makes a MASSIVE difference. First up: shoes. The OCR mentioned 'comfortable shoes are walking shoes, running shoes' and trust me, this is gospel! You'll be doing tons of walking, exploring charming cobblestone streets and vibrant city centers. Invest in a pair of supportive, broken-in sneakers or walking shoes. Your feet will thank you after a long day of sightseeing! Next, let's dive into bags. My absolute must-have is a secure 'crossbody bag'. This isn't just about fashion; it's about practicality and safety. I always look for one with multiple compartments and a secure zipper. It keeps my passport, phone, and money close and visible, deterring pickpockets – a sad reality in some tourist-heavy areas. I've heard some friends rave about specific brands and features, but the key is hands-free convenience and security. For your larger luggage, think light and versatile. A good carry-on backpack or a small spinner suitcase that's easy to maneuver through train stations and tight hotel hallways is a game-changer. Don't forget a 'toiletry bag' that hangs – it's a lifesaver in small European bathrooms! Now, for the big one: 'how to get around Europe'. This was a huge learning curve for me! My top tip? Embrace public transport. Europe's train networks are incredible. For planning journeys, especially those involving multiple countries or cities, I often use apps or websites that help compare routes, like those my friends use to find 'direct train connections'. While I don't specifically endorse 'Rome2Rio' or 'Omio,' I've found that researching options in advance is key. Booking high-speed trains ahead of time can save you a pretty penny too! Within cities, walking is king, but trams, metros, and buses are your best friends. Google Maps is surprisingly accurate for public transport directions. Taxis can be convenient for airport transfers – for instance, knowing the typical 'taxi Munich airport to city price' beforehand can prevent surprises. However, for day-to-day exploring, they can quickly eat into your budget. Utilizing your cellphone with local SIM cards or eSIMs for navigation and communication is non-negotiable. It makes finding those hidden gems and staying connected so much easier. Finally, a word on your 'itinerary'. While it's tempting to cram everything in, I've learned that less is often more. Focus on a few regions or countries rather than trying to see all of Europe in one go. If you're wondering about the 'best European countries to visit in May', for example, consider the weather – spring is gorgeous across most of Western and Southern Europe, with fewer crowds than summer. Build in downtime! Some of my most cherished memories involve simply sitting at a cafe, people-watching, or getting wonderfully lost down a side street. Having a rough plan for major sights is good, but leave room for spontaneity. Oh, and always have a copy of important 'contact details' readily accessible, just in case!
