New Hampshire

... Read moreOkay, fellow nature lovers, let me tell you, New Hampshire truly is a treasure trove for wildlife enthusiasts! I've had some of my most breathtaking encounters here, and I want to share how you can too. Beyond the well-known spots, there's so much more to discover about the creatures that call this beautiful state home. While the White Mountain National Forest is epic for spotting majestic moose and black bears (I once saw a mama bear with her cubs near Kancamagus Highway!), don't forget the quieter trails. For *deer*, dawn and dusk are prime times in almost any wooded area, especially near open fields. The Great Bay National Wildlife Refuge is indeed a *birdwatcher's paradise*. I've spent hours there, spotting everything from colorful warblers to majestic bald eagles soaring overhead. If you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of a great horned owl at twilight. Their calls are so distinct! And the NH Lakes Region? Absolutely magical for *common loons*! Hearing their haunting calls echo across the water is an unforgettable experience. I've even seen beavers building their dams, and if you're super patient, you might spot an otter playing in the water. Keep an eye out for the elusive fisher near streams and wooded areas – they're quick! From my experience, the best time to see most New Hampshire wildlife is early morning or late evening. Animals like moose and deer are most active then, especially in spring and fall. Winter can be incredible for tracking, and sometimes you can spot a lynx or even a gray wolf (though they are very rare and shy!) if you venture into deeper, less-trafficked areas, always with safety in mind of course. Don't forget your binoculars! They're a game-changer for spotting details on that bald eagle far away or getting a closer look at a loon without disturbing it. A good camera is a must, and if you're serious, a field guide can help identify the birds and mammals you encounter. Always pack water, snacks, and bug spray, especially in mosquito season! Beyond the general tips, I personally love supporting organizations like the Squam Lakes Science Center. It's not just a place to *learn about conservation*; it's a living example of how we can coexist with *New Hampshire wildlife*. When you visit places like this, you're directly contributing to their efforts. Remember 'leave no trace' isn't just a catchphrase. It means packing out everything you pack in, staying on marked trails to protect habitats, and never, ever feeding wild animals. A fed bear is a dead *bear*, and we want to keep them wild and safe. If you encounter a moose or *bear*, give them plenty of space – they look calm but are wild animals! Every time I'm out in the wild here, I feel a deep connection to nature. Protecting New Hampshire's incredible wildlife is a shared responsibility, and every small action helps. Let's keep exploring, learning, and preserving these precious creatures for generations to come!
