You don’t know it until you experience it yourself…

The magnitude of the loss is so great because your mom is the person who created you. Gave you life. She literally built the foundation of your life, she is the foundation. Losing your mom feels like the tether that binds you to the world is completely ripped it away and now you’re just out here floating around, aimlessly.

I am loyal to a fault, it always gets me hurt in the end, and I lost the only other person in the world as loyal to me as I was to her… so yes, I wasn’t built for this.

... Read moreLosing a mother is often described as losing a piece of one's soul. The bond between a mother and child is unique and foundational, shaping not only who we are but also how we relate to the world. When that bond is severed, the grief can feel overwhelming, disorienting, and relentless. It's important to understand that grief is not a linear process but a journey marked by fluctuating emotions. Patience with oneself during this time is essential. As one reads, "Be patient with me... I wasn't built for this kind of goodbye," it echoes a universal plea from those experiencing such loss. Grief can manifest in feelings of aimlessness or floating without direction, as if the tether binding one to the world is ripped away. Acknowledging loyalty as a double-edged sword, where profound devotion can lead to deep hurt, helps put into perspective the intense pain stemming from losing someone who was equally loyal. Those who experience such loss may feel unprepared, as if they weren’t built to navigate life without their mom’s presence. Support networks, whether through family, friends, or grief support groups, are vital in processing this journey. Sharing experiences, like the #griefjourney or #griefandloss hashtags indicate, can offer comfort and a sense of community. Remember that it’s okay to mourn in your own way and seek help when needed. Self-compassion and time are crucial in healing. While the pain may never fully disappear, many find that gradually, they learn to carry their loss with strength rather than being weighed down by it. Engaging in memorial practices or creating a legacy project can also provide a way to honor a mother’s memory while fostering personal growth and acceptance. This heartfelt reflection reminds us all to approach those in grief with kindness and understanding, recognizing that each person’s grief journey is profoundly personal and deserving of patience and respect.
