Read with me: Final Girl Support Group
This book did disappoint me. And I probably would have DNF’d it if I didn’t enjoy the author’s latest book, “Witchcraft for Wayward Girls”, so much.
Overall 3/5 stars.
Reading 'Final Girl Support Group' truly feels like stepping into the fragmented mind of someone haunted by traumatic survival. At first, the book’s chaotic and clunky writing style can feel overwhelming, mirroring the main character’s scattered thoughts and paranoia, which might be off-putting for some readers. However, as the story progresses, the narrative tightens, and the plot gains momentum, revealing a compelling tale about the aftermath of horror and the psychological scars borne by survivors. What I found particularly immersive were the nuanced insights into the protagonist’s interactions and her complex relationship with others who have endured similar trauma. The vivid descriptions of everyday struggles, like cleaning out a greasy, cluttered car seat filled with remnants of fast food and discarded cups, create a deeply human and raw atmosphere. These moments symbolize the messy, unresolved chaos in her life both physically and emotionally. The book’s exploration of trust and fear in relationships is also striking. The hesitant exchanges with a young man, reflecting vulnerability and the desire for protection, illuminate the ongoing battle survivors face—between wanting connection and fearing danger. It’s this tension that makes the narrative both unsettling and relatable. For readers intrigued by psychological horror with a strong emotional core, Hendrix’s story offers reflections on mental health and survival guilt through a unique lens. The portrayal of ‘final girls’—those who survive horror only to confront enduring trauma—adds layers of depth rarely seen in typical thriller novels. If you’re someone who appreciates character-driven stories that slowly build suspense while tackling serious themes, this book’s uneven start might be worth persisting through. Personally, I used ambient music to aid my focus while reading, which helped me stay engaged through the slower early chapters. For anyone considering this book, I recommend preparing for a challenging but ultimately rewarding experience that goes beyond mere horror tropes to portray the very real consequences of surviving violence. The last two-thirds of the book offer a more satisfying balance of story and character development, making the initial struggle worthwhile for those patient enough to see it through.
