Braids To Keep My Hair.

My aunt would braid my hair twice a week growing up because I ‘wouldn’t take care of my hair,’ which would make it a literal rat’s nest. We didn’t know about my genetic conditions yet, just that I was struggling to take care of myself. Fast forward 10 years and I learn that my muscles struggle with glucose and acetylcholine, and using said muscles is actually what makes my symptoms worse. I struggled a lot and eventually shaved my head 2 years ago during the peak of my symptoms. But my hair makes me feel confident and pretty, so I’ve been growing it out ever since. Now that I need help in so many other areas of my day to day, my hair has become a lot. In an attempt to off-set that, I’m going back to what my Aunt Pooh taught me: braid it baby. I plan to keep the braids in for 3-4 days (we’ll see what the OCD allows). Hoping itll help reduce the frequency of washes, but if not I’ll be thankful the braids will eliminate the matted hair from built up knots. I refuse to lose my hair, again, to these stupid diseases.

Beyond breakage, braids are fantastic for moisture retention. My hair tends to dry out quickly, but when it’s braided, the strands are less exposed to the elements. I've found that applying a lightweight leave-in conditioner or oil before braiding helps to seal in moisture, keeping my hair hydrated for days. This not only makes it feel softer but also contributes to its overall strength, reducing the risk of losing my hair prematurely due to dryness.
