What do y'all think about Spotify's new feature "Spotify Reserved"? Is it actually a win for top listeners, or is it just another cash grab locked behind a paywall? #spotify #concerttickets #concertseason
From my experience and observations, Spotify Reserved is an intriguing development aimed at giving dedicated fans a better chance to secure concert tickets, which often sell out within minutes during presale events. By leveraging listening habits and engagement signals like shares, saves, and playlist activity, Spotify attempts to identify genuine fans rather than passive or automated listeners. This selective reservation system could reduce frustration among top listeners who feel overlooked by traditional lotteries and scalpers. However, it also raises concerns. Many users outside the US or those without Premium subscriptions are excluded, which may feel unfair in the global music community. Moreover, the filtering process Spotify uses to distinguish “real fans” versus “sleep streamers” or bot users is proprietary, so transparency is limited. While this protects against gaming the system, some fans worry about misclassification—where highly engaged listeners might not qualify for reservations. In terms of cost, Spotify Reserved tickets come with service fees and are non-transferable, which adds complexity. Yet, having a dedicated window to buy tickets ahead of the general sale can save time and reduce anxiety amidst overwhelming demand, especially for major artists whose ticket queues stretch endlessly. An important consideration is whether this feature encourages more genuine interaction with artists’ music, or if it inadvertently incentivizes excessive streaming solely to gain ticket priority. Ultimately, Spotify Reserved reflects an ongoing shift toward integrating streaming data with live event access, blending digital fan behaviors with real-world experiences. For concert enthusiasts like myself, while it’s not a perfect solution, Spotify Reserved provides an innovative way to reconnect music streaming into the concert-going journey, rewarding those who truly engage with artists’ work rather than those gaming streaming metrics.
