God forbid a man has hobbies!
From my own experience reading romance and romantasy novels, characters who defy traditional masculine stereotypes make the story much richer and more engaging. It’s refreshing to see men who show emotional vulnerability, protectiveness, and even a softer side through their unique hobbies or caring behaviors. For example, when a male character enters a competition like the sea games to protect a woman, it reveals his dedication beyond just physical strength. Asking questions like “Who did this to you?” or comforting someone through nightmares shows emotional intelligence rarely highlighted in typical male roles. These moments build a genuine connection that makes their romantic arc believable and heartfelt. The line “God forbid a man has hobbies” humorously points to societal expectations that men should be stoic or disinterested in leisure activities that reveal personality depth. But in the context of romantasy books, these hobbies and shifts in personality add necessary complexity, making heroes multidimensional rather than one-note. In my own writing and reading circle, celebrating these traits encourages more diverse storytelling where male characters are allowed to experience a wider emotional and personal range. It also invites readers to appreciate vulnerability as strength and understand that interests outside traditional roles enrich character development. This helps foster empathy and connection between readers and characters, which is the heart of effective romance and fantasy storytelling.
