PUERTO RICO
Coamo, often overlooked by travelers focused on Puerto Rico’s more famous cities like San Juan, offers a unique glimpse into the island’s heritage and natural beauty. Known as the oldest settlement in Puerto Rico established in the 16th century, Coamo is famed for its therapeutic hot springs, which have attracted visitors for centuries. These natural springs, rich in minerals, provide a relaxing escape and are a highlight for wellness tourism on the island. Besides the hot springs, Coamo boasts several historical sites including the Plaza de Recreo, a charming town square surrounded by colonial architecture that tells stories of Puerto Rico’s past. Walking through Coamo’s streets, you can feel the vibrant community spirit and enjoy local festivals that showcase Puerto Rican music, food, and crafts. For those interested in history, the nearby San Blas de Illescas Church is a must-visit as it dates back to the early days of the town’s founding. One of my favorite experiences in Coamo was visiting the thermal baths early in the morning, followed by a stroll through the quaint local markets. The friendly locals are always eager to share stories and recommend authentic dishes to try, such as 'asopao' and fresh seafood. If you're planning a trip to Puerto Rico, including Coamo will enrich your itinerary with cultural depth and relaxing natural experiences away from the usual tourist crowds.
