「阿蘇神社（阿蘇神宮）に行くなら、近くの国造神社も寄るべき？」と迷って、今回は阿蘇國造神社（国造神社）にも足を運びました。結論から言うと、賑やかな観光というより“阿蘇のはじまりの空気”を感じたい人に刺さる場所でした。 まず名前が紛らわしいので、私なりに整理します。 ・阿蘇神社／阿蘇神宮：全国的にも有名で参拝客が多く、門前町の雰囲気も含めて観光しやすい印象。 ・阿蘇國造神社（国造神社／くにつくり神社）：一の宮エリアにあり、静かな境内で由緒をじっくり味わえるタイプ。 ※呼び方は「国造神社」「阿蘇國造神社」と表記ゆれがありますが、現地では“國造”の字に出会えるのも旅の面白さでした。 境内で印象に残ったのは、写真にもある「2000年の歴史を知る」という言葉どおりの重み。派手な演出がない分、木々の音や足音まで際立って、厳かな雰囲気の境内に自然と背筋が伸びます。「阿蘇を造った神が眠る」といった伝承を思い浮かべながら歩くと、ただの参拝ではなく“土地の記憶に触れる”感覚になりました。 見どころとしては、大杉の存在感が圧倒的。樹齢2000年を超えると伝わる大杉は、近くで見ると想像以上に太くて、木肌の年輪の時間に言葉が出なくなります。境内を歩いていると、森の中に“突如現れる”ように視界が開ける瞬間があって、そこが個人的なハイライトでした。 参拝のコツは、時間に余裕を持つこと。阿蘇神宮のように「次はここ、次はあそこ」とテンポよく回るより、深呼吸してゆっくり歩く方が良さが伝わります。朝〜午前中は特に空気が澄んでいて、写真も撮りやすかったです。 「阿蘇神社とは？」を調べて来た人にも伝えたいのは、阿蘇は“有名な一社だけ”で完結しないということ。阿蘇神宮で王道の参拝をしたあと、阿蘇國造神社で静けさに浸る——このセットで、阿蘇の歴史と自然の厚みが一段深く感じられました。次に阿蘇へ行くなら、ぜひ候補に入れてみてください。
