“Good” doesn’t mean the same thing to everyone.

We can’t rely on ourselves to define what’s good because our standards change depending on our feelings, experiences, and circumstances.

Just look at your TV screen. How many times have you watched something and thought, “I would never do that,” or “That’s not right”?

That reaction alone proves we all have different definitions of good.

And for those who believe they’re good on their own—how easy is it to justify revenge when someone hurts you? To excuse gossip, dishonesty, or taking advantage of someone when it feels deserved?

If our definition of good changes with our emotions, can we really trust ourselves to be the standard?

That’s why I don’t trust my own definition of goodness—I trust God’s. His standard never changes.

6/15 Edited to

... Read moreReflecting on the concept of "good" from personal experience, I've often noticed how subjective this idea can be among friends and family. For instance, what I consider a kind gesture might be overlooked or even misunderstood by someone else because of their unique background or perspective. This aligns with the observation that our personal standards fluctuate based on our emotions, upbringing, and past experiences. One particularly striking moment that deepened my understanding was when I faced a situation involving conflict. Initially, my immediate reaction was to seek justified revenge, feeling it was 'fair' due to the pain caused. However, reconsidering the idea of an absolute, unchanging standard of goodness—like the one described as coming from God—helped me pause and reassess my feelings. It made me understand how easily our moral compass can be swayed by circumstances and emotions. The OCR content from the article highlights a powerful scriptural reference in Mark 10:18, where Jesus says, "No one is good except God alone." This verse resonated with me because it challenges us to step beyond subjective judgments and acknowledge a higher, consistent benchmark for goodness. Additionally, the concept of free will mentioned reminds me that while we are free to define good for ourselves, this freedom comes with responsibility. Recognizing that someone's good might differ from mine helped me develop more empathy and tolerance. In daily life, especially in increasingly diverse societies, embracing this perspective encourages healthy dialogue about morality and ethics. It also fosters humility, as we realize our definitions might be incomplete or biased. Ultimately, trusting in an unchanging standard, rather than fluctuating personal opinions, promotes a more grounded and compassionate approach to living "good." It helped me navigate complex situations with more clarity, patience, and understanding, reinforcing the value of looking beyond ourselves for guidance.
