Before choosing your next vacation spot, do you ever stop and check how people like you are treated there?
I know it might seem like a bit of paranoia, but not every city is welcoming to everyone. Some places just don’t feel right the second you step off the plane or make a pit stop during a roadtrip.
Take Paris, for example. I was so excited to studyabroad there, but every corner I turned, I felt like someone was always trying to rob me. Even the gypsy kids that tried to pick pocket me. I wasn’t scared, but my New York instincts kicked in real quick. And that’s just petty crime, let's not forget about places where people like me aren’t safe after dark.
Explaining this to people who aren't from here has been a little challenging. They view America as so welcoming, but then you have to remind them that sundown cities still exist and explain to them that it's not for them. And let’s be real, with the way the world is right now, traveling as an American probably feels different. Of course some countries love us. Others? Not so much.
So before you book your next trip, will you be asking yourself:

☑️ Will I be welcome?
☑️ Is this a place I’ll actually enjoy?

My fear of this exactly is what prevents me from traveling. I won’t really know what a place is like till I get there and I feel like I would be an easy target. When I went to Pompeii as a middle school I was almost abducted in the parking lot since my aunt/uncle were preoccupied and it was only a few minutes of me looking a little lost someone took the opportunity to grab me and start dragging me away. 😭😭
