Daily Devotional: When We Don't Feel Enough

There are seasons where we begin to question our ability...wondering if we are capable, if we are enough, or if we can really do what is in front of us.

If you've been there, you're not alone.

But when we bring those thoughts to Scripture, we see that the issue is not just how we feel, it's where we are looking.

2 Corinthians 3:5 teaches us that we are not sufficient "of ourselves." That means our ability, our adequacy, and even our confidence were never meant to come from within us. Our sufficiency is from God.

So when we feel like we are not enough, Scripture is not surprised by that...it actually confirms it. The problem is not that we feel insufficient; it's what we do next.

God speaks directly into that place in 2 Corinthians 12:9:

"And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me."

Weakness is not a disqualifier. According to God's Word, it is the very place where His strength is made perfect.

Because of this, Scripture gives us clear instruction:

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding;" - Proverbs 3:5

Often, discouragement grows when we begin to measure ourselves by our own understanding...relying on what we can see in ourselves rather than what God has said.

The command is not to trust ourselves, it is to trust the Lord.

And this leads us to the foundation of our ability:

"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." - Philippians 4:13

Our ability is not found in self-confidence, but in dependence on Christ.

When we begin to feel this discouragement, Scripture has shows us how to respond:

1. Acknowledge the truth about ourselves; 2 Corinthians 3:5

We are not sufficient on our own...this is not failure, it is what God has already said.

2. Turn our focus to God's sufficiency; 2 Corinthians 12:9

Instead of measuring ourselves, we rest in the sufficiency of His grace.

3. Choose to trust Him, and not lean on yourself; Proverbs 3:5

We actively have to shift our reliance away from our own understanding and place it in Him.

4. Move forward in dependence on Christ; Philippians 4:13

Even if we feel weak, we take the step in front of us, trusting in His strength.

This leads us to this truth:

What God has called us to, He has already made Himself sufficient for.

... Read moreFeeling not enough is a common human experience, especially when challenges seem overwhelming or when we doubt our own capabilities. From personal experience, I’ve found that these moments are not signs of failure but invitations to shift our perspective and reliance away from ourselves and towards God. It’s powerful to remember that, as 2 Corinthians 3:5 reminds us, we are naturally insufficient on our own, but God’s sufficiency covers our limitations. In times when self-doubt creeps in, I try to pause and recall 2 Corinthians 12:9, where God’s grace is described as sufficient, and His strength is made perfect in weakness. This verse has been a lifeline, helping me embrace my vulnerabilities rather than see them as setbacks. It changed how I view weakness—not as a disqualifier but as an opportunity for God’s power to manifest. Additionally, Proverbs 3:5 encourages us to trust the Lord wholeheartedly instead of leaning on our limited understanding. Incorporating this into daily life means actively choosing to place trust in God’s promises instead of what our feelings or circumstances might suggest. It’s a daily practice that requires intentionality but produces profound peace. Philippians 4:13 remains a personal favorite verse because it reaffirms that our true ability to overcome and persevere comes through Christ who strengthens us. When discouraged, moving forward step-by-step in dependence on Christ rather than our fragile confidence has made a huge difference in my journey. If you find yourself wrestling with feelings of inadequacy, consider these steps: acknowledge that feeling insufficient is part of the human condition, turn your focus away from self-assessment toward God’s grace, choose to trust Him over your understanding, and take that next step with confidence in Christ’s strength. This approach has helped me discover that what God calls us to, He has already made sufficient provision for—turning moments of doubt into opportunities for spiritual growth and renewed faith.
