Owning Khaki Campbells
We have raised them since ducklings and they still think we're out to get them when we try and touch them. So we bribe with food to want to be near us. They typically love from a foot distance unless we have food.
My journey with Khaki Campbell ducks started with the sweetest little ducklings, full of adorable chirps and wobbly steps. Like many new duck parents, I imagined having a flock of friendly, follow-me ducks that would happily waddle up for a pet. While they've certainly brought immense joy and life to our homestead, I've learned a lot about setting realistic expectations, especially regarding their temperament and how 'friendly' these specific ducks truly are. From the very beginning, Khaki Campbell duckling care involves providing a warm brooder, fresh water, and appropriate feed. I made sure to handle them gently and frequently when they were tiny, hoping to imprint on them and foster a strong bond. Even with consistent interaction, I've found that Khaki Campbells tend to retain a certain wildness or wariness compared to some other duck breeds. They are naturally active and alert birds, always on the lookout for tasty bugs and new foraging spots. This inquisitive and independent nature means they're often too busy exploring to seek out human affection. In my experience, their friendliness is often directly proportional to whether or not I'm holding a treat. They'll happily come within a foot or so, eagerly watching for scattered corn or tasty greens, but a direct attempt to pet them usually results in a quick flutter away. It's not that they're aggressive; it's more like they operate on their own terms. I've learned to appreciate their unique personalities and respect their need for space. Building trust with these wary waterfowl has been a process of patience and consistent, gentle presence, proving that even without cuddles, the bond you form can be deeply rewarding. Beyond their somewhat aloof nature, Khaki Campbells are truly exceptional ducks. They are renowned for their incredible egg-laying abilities, often producing an egg nearly every day. Their active foraging habits also make them excellent garden companions for pest control (though you might need to supervise them around young plants!). They thrive with plenty of space to roam and access to water for playing and preening. Providing a safe, clean environment and a consistent routine goes a long way in keeping them happy and healthy, even if they don't always want to be picked up. For anyone considering Khaki Campbell ducks, I'd say prepare for an active, productive, and somewhat independent flock. Embrace their natural instincts, enjoy their amusing antics, and don't take it personally if they prefer a food bribe over a cuddle. They are fantastic ducks for eggs and pest control, and their vibrant personalities bring so much character to the homestead, even if they keep you at a respectful distance.
