Daily Devotional: Counting My Blessings
There are moments when the goodness of God feels especially near; when joy rises effortlessly and gratitude overflows from the heart.
Yesterday with my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ was one of those moments. Being surrounded by their faith and joy uplifted my spirit, and I pray that I can pour that same encouragement back into them.
Moments like that remind me; what if counting our blessings wasn't something we only did in seasons of abundance, but a discipline we carried into every season?
So often, we become aware of what's missing before we recognize what's been given. Yet the Psalmist calls us to remember; to actively bring to mind the ways God has provided, protected, and sustained us.
Every breath is a gift. Every open door, every closed door, every lesson, every provision; it all carries His fingerprints.
Gratitude shifts our focus. It pulls our eyes away from comparison, away from lack, and centers us on the faithfulness of God.
When we begin to county our blessings, we realize they are not few, they are countless.
"Many, O Lord my God, are Your wonderful works
Which You have done;
And Your thoughts toward us
Cannot be recounted to You in order;
If I would declare and speak of them,
They are more than can be numbered." - Psalm 40:5
Even in difficult seasons, there is always something to thank Him for:
- His presence.
- His mercy.
- His unchanging nature.
Joy rooted in blessings is not fragile, it is anchored in truth.
Take a few moments today to write down at least 5 specific blessings in your life, big or small. As you do, thank God for each one intentionally.
And let these two songs be the songs of our hearts today:
1. 10,000 Reasons - Matt Redman
"Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul,
Worship His holy name..."
2. Count Your Blessings - Johnson Oatman, Jr.
“Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God has done…”
When we remember His blessings, our hearts can't help but respond in worship.
As I wrote this devotional, I found myself singing these songs without even thinking. I am so thankful that Jesus has given us a way to worship Him with our voices in song; where gratitude turns into praise and our hearts can freely respond to His goodness. 🤍
Reflecting on the practice of counting blessings has truly transformed my spiritual walk over time. Initially, I approached it as something to do only during overwhelmingly positive moments or seasons of abundance. However, I’ve found that weaving this discipline into every part of life—including the difficult seasons—has brought a profound shift in perspective and peace. One of the most impactful lessons I’ve learned is that blessings come in various forms—not just material or obvious ones but also in intangible ways like God’s presence during hardships, the lessons learned from trials, and the consistent mercy that never fades. Psalm 103:2, which reminds us to "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits," resonates deeply because it calls us to recall every subtle and grand provision. In my own experience, when I intentionally write down five specific blessings each day, regardless of how big or small, I become more aware of God’s constant care. This practice helps me combat feelings of comparison or scarcity, and it anchors my joy in the unchanging truth of His goodness rather than circumstances. Songs like “10,000 Reasons” by Matt Redman and the hymn “Count Your Blessings” have also become powerful tools that reinforce this gratitude in my heart. Singing these praises, even when I don’t feel like it, naturally lifts my spirit and turns gratitude into worship. I encourage others to try this simple yet life-changing discipline: take time daily to reflect, write, and thank God for specific blessings. You’ll find that your outlook on life shifts, your trust grows, and your heart responds more freely with praise—no matter the season you’re walking through.

Thank you for this
