Daily Devotional: Take Up Your Cross
When Jesus spoke these words, the cross was not a symbol of comfort; it was a symbol of death. To "take up your cross" meant a one-way journey of surrender.
This isn't about carrying burdens like a busy schedule or a hard day. It's about choosing God's will over your own, every single day.
- Deny yourself = Lay down your desires, pride, and control.
- Take up your cross daily = Choose obedience even when it costs you.
- Follow Me = Walk in His footsteps, not just in belief, but in action.
This is not a one-time decision; it is a daily death to self and a daily choosing of Christ.
What does taking up your cross daily look like in real life?
1. Choosing obedience over feelings.
You may feel like responding in anger, but you choose gentleness instead.
That moment of restraint? That is cross-carrying.
2. Dying to pride.
When you want to be right, to be seen, or to win; but instead you choose humility.
That surrender of ego? That is cross-carrying.
3. Letting go of control.
Trusting God's plan when things don't go your way.
Saying "Your will, not mine." That is cross-carrying.
4. Loving when it's undeserved.
Forgiving someone who hasn't apologized. Showing kindness when it's not returned.
That costly love reflects Jesus.
5. Turning away from sin; again and again.
Even when the temptation is strong and familiar.
Every "no" to sin is a "yes" to the cross.
6. Speaking truth even when it's uncomfortable.
Sharing your faith or standing firm in truth, even if it risks rejection.
That courage carries weight, and it's worth it.
Here's the hard truth:
We often want to follow Jesus without dying to ourselves.
But Jesus makes it clear; you cannot separate the cross from discipleship.
Ask yourself honestly:
- Where am I still choosing myself over Him?
- Am I following Jesus...or just agreeing with Him?
The cross will always cost you something.
But what you gain in Christ is infinitely greater.
“For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it.” - Luke 9:24
Before you go through your day, ask:
"What is one thing I need to lay down today to follow Jesus more fully?"
Then, when the moment comes, choose Him.
That choice, no matter how small it seems, is you taking up your cross.
