Growing in Knowledge Without Growing in Pride
It is very easy when you start to learn more about a subject to become confident in what you are learning. Confidence is not entirely wrong, but if we are not careful, it can slowly turn into pride.
The more we learn, the easier it becomes to trust our own understanding instead of remaining dependent on God. Knowledge is a gift from God, but it should always lead us to humility, not self-exaltation.
God calls us to prepare diligently in His Word so we can stand firm in the truth that we have learned.
"Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." - 2 Timothy 2:15
Being able to rightly divide the Word of Truth is very important. We do not want to add to or take away from God's Word. We want to understand what God is truly saying through Scripture.
When studying, we can ask questions such as:
- What does God say about this subject?
- What is the full context of this passage?
- What was happening at the time this was written?
- What was God trying to teach through this example?
Asking questions like these helps us avoid using isolated verses to support our own agendas. Instead, it helps us understand the message God intended to communicate.
Someone once told me that you can read the same passage of Scripture years apart and notice something new you never realized before. The Word of God is living and active. As we grow in our walk with Christ, God continues to reveal truths that we may have overlooked or just not understood before.
How beautiful it is to know that even when we have read a passage many times, there is still more to learn. We will never fully exhaust the depths of God's Word.
At the same time, we must be careful that our growing knowledge does not produce pride.
Paul warned:
"Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies." - 1 Corinthians 8:1
Knowledge alone can make us feel important, but godly knowledge should lead us to love God more and serve others better.
We should never assume that we know it all. The moment we believe we have nothing left to learn, we stop approaching God's Word with humility. A teachable heart recognizes that there will always be more to learn from the One who inspired the Scriptures.
God breathed the Scriptures for our continual learning and growth.
"All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works." - 2 Timothy 3:16-17
We all need confidence to share the Gospel and teach what God has shown us. However, our confidence should never come from believing we know everything. Our confidence should come from knowing that God is faithful to teach, guide, and equip those who seek Him.
As we grow in our knowledge of Scripture, let us never lose our humility before the Author of Scripture. Study diligently. Learn faithfully. Teach boldly. But remember that every truth we discover is a gift from God, not a reason to exalt ourselves.
Go out with Christlike confidence, and share the good news with a heart that remains humble, grateful, and teachable before the Lord.
“How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, who bring glad tidings of good things!" - Romans 10:15
In my personal journey of studying the Bible, I've often grappled with balancing the confidence gained through knowledge and the humility God calls us to maintain. One practical step that helped me was keeping a journal of insights and questions rather than assumptions. By writing down verses I learned along with what I didn’t fully understand, I stayed humble and continually sought God's guidance in prayer. The verse from 2 Timothy 2:15, "Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth," became a daily reminder for me to study carefully and honestly. Instead of using Scripture to prove my own point, I learned to ask what God truly intended, considering context and historical background. Another helpful practice was joining a Bible study group where diverse perspectives opened my eyes to interpretations I hadn’t noticed before. This experience reinforced that God’s Word is living and active, revealing new layers of truth as I grow spiritually. Yet, as knowledge increased, I occasionally caught myself feeling prideful or self-assured. Over time, I realized that true confidence comes not from personal understanding alone, but from trusting God’s faithfulness to teach and lead us. Paul’s words, "Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies" (1 Corinthians 8:1), reminded me to root all learning in love and service. Ultimately, God’s Word transforms and equips us not to exalt ourselves but to love richly and share the gospel humbly. The daily discipline of studying Scripture with a humble, teachable heart continues to deepen my walk with Christ and encourages me to share His message boldly, relying fully on His guidance and grace.
