Daily Devotional: Weeping With Those Who Weep

"Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep." - Romans 12:15

One of the greatest gifts we can offer someone who is grieving is not the perfect words...it is our presence. When someone we love loses a dear friend or family member, we often feel pressure to "fix" their sorrow. We search for comforting words, hoping to ease the pain. Yet grief is not something to be solved; it is something to be carried together.

Jesus Himself demonstrated this beautifully. Though He knew He was about to raise Lazarus from the dead, He still stood beside Mary and Martha and wept (John 11:35). He entered into their sorrow. He didn't rush them through their grief or dismiss their tears because He knew the ending. Instead, He showed that compassion often speaks louder than explanations.

As followers of Christ, we are called to do the same. Sometimes the most Christ-like response is simply sitting beside someone, listening without interruption, praying with them, and reminding them that they are not alone.

For those who are grieving, remember that God never asks you to pretend everything is okay. The psalmists poured out their hearts before the Lord with honesty, and God welcomed every tear. Psalm 56:8 tells us that He keeps track of our wanderings and puts our tears into His bottle. Not one tear escapes His notice.

Grief may come in waves. Some days will feel lighter, while others may unexpectedly reopen the wound. That does not mean your faith is weak...it means your love was real. The Lord walks with you through every valley, never abandoning His children.

For those comforting others, don't underestimate the ministry of simply being available. A meal, a handwritten card, a hug, a quiet prayer, or simply saying, "I'm here," can become a powerful reminder of God's love. We may not have the answers, but we know the One who is "the Father of mercies and God of all comfort" (2 Corinthians 1:3-4). As He comforts us, we become vessels of that same comfort to others.

Grief reminds us that this world is not our final home. Because of Christ's victory over death, those who belong to Him have a hope that reaches beyond the grave. Our tears are real, but so is our hope. One day, our Savior will wipe away every tear, and death, sorrow, crying, and pain will be no more.

Until that day, may we be people who love deeply, comfort faithfully, and point one another to the hope found in Jesus Christ.

7/24 Edited to

... Read moreIn my own experience walking alongside friends during times of grief, I've found that sometimes the simplest gestures carry the deepest meaning. Whether it’s sitting quietly without saying a word or offering a gentle hug, presence has often been more powerful than any words. I've learned that trying to 'fix' grief or rush someone out of their sorrow rarely helps; instead, allowing them space to feel their pain authentically becomes a sacred act of love. The scripture Romans 12:15, "Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep," truly captures this beautifully. It reminds me that empathy requires entering into the emotions of others fully—being present in their joy and sorrow alike. This mutual vulnerability builds connection and spiritual support that mere words cannot provide. Additionally, the image of God collecting our tears, as mentioned in Psalm 56:8, offers deep comfort. Knowing that not one tear is unnoticed or insignificant underlines God’s intimate care for us. When comforting others, having this mindset helps me remain humble and patient, recognizing that grief is complex and nonlinear. Some days may feel lighter, others heavier, and all feelings are legitimate. Another lesson I have embraced is the importance of prayer—not just speaking to God on someone’s behalf but praying with them when appropriate. This shared spiritual practice can foster peace and remind those grieving that they are not alone, supported by both fellow believers and God’s eternal presence. Lastly, I find hope in Christ’s victory over death, as highlighted in the devotional. This hope transforms our understanding of grief from an endpoint to a passage. It encourages us to comfort faithfully while looking forward to a time when pain and sorrow will cease. This balance of real sadness with enduring hope sustains me as I both grieve and support others through their journeys.
