Birthday tradition I didn't celebrate 😔

2024/9/18 Edited to

... Read moreAs parents, we often carry expectations for how we'll celebrate milestones, shaped by our own childhoods or perhaps by what we see online. My little one's first birthday was a perfect example for me. I had visions of a lively gathering, colorful balloons, and all the classic family traditions I grew up with. But as life often dictates, circumstances – like extended family being far away – led us to a much quieter, more intimate affair. And honestly? It was absolutely perfect, proving that sometimes, the most person-centered approach truly creates the most *everlasting smiles & memories*. This experience got me thinking deeply about the true role of birthday rituals in building a child's personal narrative. Is it about the grand spectacle, or the genuine joy and focused attention showered upon them? For us, that meant focusing entirely on our baby. Watching him delight in his *cake*, covered in frosting from head to toe, was a moment bursting with pure, unadulterated fun. It was a memory far more precious than any perfectly curated party could have offered. It was a quiet first birthday celebration that was individually tailored to *him*, making it truly his day in every sense. This taught me a valuable lesson about prioritizing what truly matters. Instead of trying to recreate what others do, we found our own way to celebrate. If you're pondering how to make a birthday special, especially a first birthday when a big bash might not be feasible, here are a few thoughts based on my own journey: Focus on the Individual's Joy: What truly brings happiness to your child? For a baby, it might be sensory play – like watching them explore the texture and taste of their *cake*. For an older child, it could be a favorite activity, a special meal cooked just for them, or dedicated one-on-one time. This is the essence of making it their birthday, not just a party for everyone else. Create New Family Rituals: If old traditions don't fit your current family dynamic, invent new ones! It could be a special birthday breakfast, a specific story read every year, a yearly photo taken in the same spot, or a unique birthday song. These small, consistent acts build a powerful personal narrative and a strong sense of belonging for your child. Embrace Simplicity: Sometimes, less is genuinely more. A quiet celebration focused on connection, cuddles, and genuine happiness can be far more impactful than an overwhelming event. Remember, everlasting smiles & memories are often found in the simplest, most authentic moments. My baby enjoyed playing with the cake more than any elaborate decorations. Capture the Candid Moments: Forget the pressure for perfection. The smeared cake, the excited squeals, the messy hands – these are the moments you'll cherish forever. Document them not just for social media, but for your family's own story. These raw, joyous instances define the person-centered care we offer our children. The 'Person-Centered' Approach for Little Ones: For babies, their 'wants' are beautifully simple: comfort, joy, and exploration. A cake smash, like the one we had, is a fantastic example of a truly person-centered activity. It's all about their experience, their curiosity, and their pure, unadulterated fun, allowing them to lead the celebration in their own way. Ultimately, whether you decide on celebrating all of the birthdays for the month together with a group or, like us, *celebrating each person's birthday individually*, the goal remains the same: to make the person being celebrated feel loved, seen, and truly special. Our unconventional first birthday taught me that the most beautiful traditions are the ones we create ourselves, filled with intention and genuine happiness, forging everlasting smiles & memories that truly belong to us.

Birthday tradition I WON’T be doing with my kids🙅🏻‍♀️
I grew up getting my face smashed in my birthday cake every year. As a little kid I did not like it & there’s even pictures of me crying. As a teenager I didn’t mind it, & as a young adult & adult I don’t like it just cause I don’t like stuff on my face or people touching my face.
