Under Loch and Key by Lana Ferguson (Paranormal/Monster Romance)

I loved the setting of the book, it really made me want to go back to Scotland and see more of the highlands! I loved reading about a monster that you don't really see stories about that often. I felt for Key right off the bat because of how she was treated by both Lachlan and her Grandmother. I do feel like some of the pacing of things wasn't the best || hooking up the morning after the castle and Lachlan saying its not a good idea seemed a little fast to me||. Also the whole conflict with Rhona (Key's Grandma) still rubs me the wrong way || Even with her explanation it's weird to me that she was that standoffish and mean ||. I also wish || We got to learn more about Key's magic and see her develop it more || Side note I can't believe Key was scared of highland cows, they are so adorable.

"We do not lust after assholes, damnit. "

... Read moreSo many of us dive into a new paranormal or monster romance with one burning question: how spicy is it really? And when it comes to Lana Ferguson's 'Under Loch and Key,' I know many of you are wondering about the spice level, especially with such an intriguing premise set in a Scottish landscape! From my perspective, 'Under Loch and Key' leans into the slow-burn, atmospheric romance, building tension with its grumpy/sunshine and forced proximity tropes. While it's definitely a romance novel, don't go in expecting immediate, explicit scenes on every page. The 'spice' here is more about the delicious build-up, the simmering chemistry between Key and Lachlan, and the emotional intimacy developing alongside the physical. If I had to put a rating on it, I'd say it's probably a solid 2.5 to 3 out of 5 on a general spice scale. There are definitely intimate moments, and they are well-written and meaningful to the plot and character development, but it's not overtly graphic or the sole focus. It's more about the connection and passion that arises from their unique circumstances, rather than purely explicit descriptions. What I particularly appreciated was how the monster element played into the intimacy. It adds a layer of intrigue and difference to the romantic encounters, making them feel unique to this specific story. The way Lana Ferguson explores the physical and emotional aspects of their relationship, considering Lachlan's true nature, is quite captivating. It’s not just human-on-human intimacy; there's an otherworldly edge that enhances the experience. The book truly excels in building that emotional connection, which, for me, is the foundation for any truly 'spicy' read. When you care about the characters, their intimate moments resonate so much more. The forced proximity in the castle, the clashes, and the eventual understanding between Key and Lachlan create a palpable tension that makes those romantic scenes feel earned and impactful. Delving deeper into the dynamics, the 'grumpy/sunshine' trope is a major player in building the romantic tension. Lachlan, with his guarded demeanor, and Key, with her spark and resilience, create a push-and-pull that translates into a slow-burn heat. You find yourself rooting for them to finally give in to their undeniable connection. This kind of dynamic often leads to incredibly satisfying 'spicy' moments because of the emotional payoff. It's not just about physical acts; it's about two strong personalities finally letting their guards down. The 'enemies to lovers' aspect also contributes significantly. The initial animosity and misunderstandings between Key and Lachlan lay the groundwork for a rich romantic progression. As they overcome their differences and learn to trust each other, the intimacy that follows feels incredibly earned. It's a powerful narrative tool that enhances the 'spice' because the characters have fought for their connection, making their physical expressions of love all the more potent and meaningful. This journey of overcoming obstacles makes their eventual passion feel much more profound than if it were immediate. And let's not forget the 'forced proximity.' Being stuck together, especially in a remote and mysterious castle within the Scottish landscape, inevitably intensifies feelings. The close quarters, shared challenges, and constant presence allow for subtle glances, accidental touches, and heated arguments that all fan the flames of attraction. This trope is a classic for a reason – it creates ample opportunities for chemistry to build, leading to those emotionally charged, and yes, 'spicy' encounters. It's these smaller, intimate moments that really build up the anticipation for the bigger, more explicit ones, making the overall romantic arc, and subsequently the spice, much more impactful. So, if you're looking for a monster romance with a good amount of yearning, a compelling emotional journey, and intimate scenes that are woven into the story rather than being the main event, then 'Under Loch and Key' might just be your cup of tea. It's a romance that makes you feel, and the spice is definitely there, just perhaps not in the way some might expect from day one. It's a journey worth taking, especially if you appreciated the 3.75 out of 5-star rating for its overall story and character depth.
