As a devoted romance reader, I’m always on the hunt for my next obsession, and let me tell you, S.J. Tilly’s Mountain Boss definitely caught my attention! I remember seeing the beautiful dark green cover with its light green illustrations, maybe even a physical copy next to a potted plant, and thinking, “Hmm, another workplace romance.” But this one pleasantly surprised me. Initially, I admit I was a bit skeptical. The chapters seemed quite short at first, making me wonder if the story would feel rushed or lack depth. However, as I got further into the book, that concern completely vanished. The pacing actually worked really well, keeping the story moving and making it incredibly hard to put down. Each short chapter ended on just enough of a hook to make me want to read “just one more.” Let’s talk about the tropes, because Mountain Boss delivers on some of my absolute favorites! We’ve got that undeniable Boss x Employee dynamic, which is always ripe with delicious tension. The age gap felt natural and added an interesting layer to their relationship, rather than feeling forced. And the 'insta-lust'? Oh, it was definitely there, sparking from their very first encounters and building into something truly magnetic. But beyond the immediate spark, the 'found family' aspect really warmed my heart. Seeing how the characters supported each other and formed their own little community was such a practical and enriching part of the story. Courtney, the protagonist, was an absolute hoot! Her quirkiness, like getting caught talking to herself, and her endearing relationships with her plant and the mysterious 'Lady Bear,' added so much humor and personality. I genuinely laughed out loud at her antics. She felt like a real person, flaws and all, which made her journey even more relatable. And yes, the spice! The book definitely has its moments, starting with some fun dabbling in exhibitionism that felt bold and exciting without ever feeling gratuitous. It was woven into the story in a way that enhanced the growing chemistry between the main characters, rather than just being there for shock value. If you like your romance with a healthy dose of heat, you won't be disappointed. I really appreciated the powerful quotes sprinkled throughout the book, like “The words of men will not define me. The opinion of others will not destroy me.” and the more humorous yet equally impactful “Cookies shouldn’t go in the trash. Only men.” These lines really resonated with me and highlighted the empowering themes within the story. After finishing *Mountain Boss*, I'm genuinely intrigued about the rest of the series. S.J. Tilly has created a world with compelling characters and an engaging premise, and I’m eager to see where she takes us next. For anyone looking for a spicy, heartfelt workplace romance with memorable characters and fantastic tropes, you absolutely need to add Mountain Boss to your reading list. It’s a solid 4/5 stars from me, and I can't wait to reread it!
