Reading 'Flames' by Lo Gold was a delight, especially if you're a fan of novellas that combine supernatural elements with passionate romance. The blend of monster and mortal characters brings an intriguing dynamic that adds depth to the mafia romance backdrop. One of the highlights for me was the way the story incorporated Slavic folklore, which is relatively unique in the romance genre. This cultural element adds a fresh flavor and enriches the world-building. The novella's pace is brisk, making it a perfect quick read when you’re short on time but crave an intense story. I appreciated the unexpected plot twist near the end, which really caught me off guard and left me wanting more. Although the ending felt a little rushed, it didn’t detract significantly from the overall enjoyment. I found the character portrayals compelling, especially the possessive male main character (MMC) and the conwoman heroine. Their chemistry sizzled, and the cinnamon whisky flavored scenes added a unique sensory layer to the romance. The 'fated mates' trope was handled well, enhancing the emotional stakes. The inclusion of a Mean Girls reference brought some fun, light-hearted moments amidst the darker mafia themes. The appearance of Baba hinted at potential for a spin-off, which I would be excited to read as a fan of witch lore. If you’re into monster romance with an edgy twist, a mafia setting, and folklore elements, this novella is worth picking up. Just be prepared for a shorter story with an intense pace and a desire for more spicy scenes following the conclusion.
