Starting a baking business can be an exciting and profitable venture, especially if you focus on simple yet crowd-pleasing desserts like flan, also known as quesillo. One of the biggest advantages of making flan is its affordability and accessibility. With an investment of less than 10 dollars, you can use basic ingredients commonly found at home, such as condensed milk, evaporated milk (or cream if evaporated milk isn't available), eggs, and vanilla. This makes it an ideal option to start baking from any country without worrying about sourcing expensive or exotic ingredients. Before you begin, it's advisable to start small. Using a six-inch by three-inch mold allows you to produce manageable portions that reduce risk and help you understand your local customers' preferences. You can sell flan either by whole molds or by portions, which gives flexibility in pricing and increases accessibility for different customers. Caramel is the base that gives flan its classic flavor and texture, and mastering this step is crucial. Ensuring the caramel is made correctly and cooled before pouring the custard mix is essential to prevent mixing and achieve a smooth finish. If you’re not familiar with caramel-making techniques, many simple tutorials are available online or you can ask experienced bakers for help. Baking the flan involves covering the mold with foil and baking it in a water bath at 350°F for about an hour. This gentle cooking method ensures the custard cooks evenly and remains creamy. A good test for readiness is inserting a knife or stick into the flan; if it comes out clean, it's ready. After baking, allowing the flan to cool completely before unmolding preserves its shape and texture. To promote your baking business, consider showcasing your flan on social media with appealing photos and straightforward recipes that invite engagement. Encourage customers to share their experiences or request variations, such as adding flavors or toppings. Engaging directly with your audience builds trust and strengthens your brand. Remember, success in baking businesses relies heavily on quality, consistency, and customer satisfaction. By starting small, perfecting your recipe, and investing attention into customer interaction, you'll establish a loyal base that supports your growth and helps you scale your baking venture effectively.
