Some Lessons Help You Survive. Then They Keep You Small.

Healing hasn’t been about becoming someone new.

It’s been about questioning the lessons I learned to survive.

Some of those lessons protected me when I needed them. Some helped me navigate disappointment, chaos, burnout, and relationships that taught me to expect very little.

But survival lessons don’t always translate into healthy living.

Lately, I’ve been unlearning things like:

• Love has to be hard to be real.

• Being needed is the same as being valued.

• Rest has to be earned.

• My worth is tied to what I can do for other people.

• Healing should look like constant progress.

The truth is that some beliefs can carry us through one season and hold us back in the next.

What belief are you currently unlearning? 👇🏾

... Read moreIn my own journey of healing, I found that unlearning survival lessons was both challenging and liberating. Many of us adopt coping strategies early on that help us navigate tough circumstances, but as our lives evolve, these strategies can become limiting patterns. For example, I used to believe that love had to be difficult to be genuine—a lesson that caused me to stay in emotionally exhausting relationships. Unlearning this allowed me to realize that healthy love is characterized by ease and mutual respect, not constant hardship. Similarly, mistaking being needed for being valued made me overextend myself to others, draining my energy. Recognizing that my worth is independent of others' demands has been pivotal in setting healthy boundaries. One of the most profound realizations was about rest: I no longer see rest as something I must earn only after exhaustion. Instead, I prioritize rest as a vital part of self-care, which replenishes my strength and prevents burnout. Healing is rarely linear, and some days feel like progress while others may seem like setbacks. Accepting this natural fluctuation helps in maintaining patience and self-compassion through the process. What’s important is identifying which beliefs once helped you survive but now keep you small—and having the courage to unlearn them. This shift creates space for growth, self-acceptance, and healthier relationships. If you resonate with this, start by reflecting on your current beliefs around love, worth, rest, and healing. Embrace the discomfort of unlearning; it’s a sign you’re moving toward a more authentic and fulfilling life.
