INGREDIENTS
2 tbsp vegetable oil
1/2 cup chopped onion
1 cup chopped green peppers
1½ tbsps chili powder
3 tsp minced garlic
1 tsp ground cumin
¼ tsp red pepper flakes
¼ tsp dried oregano
1/4 tsp salt
⅛ teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 lb ground turkey
1 (14.5-ounce) can diced tomatoes
1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce
¾ cup canned kidney or pinto beans, rinsed
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Heat oil in medium saucepan over medium heat until shimmering. Add onion, bell pepper, chili powder, garlic, cumin, pepper flakes, oregano, salt, and cayenne. Cook, stirring often, until vegetables begin to soften and spices are fragrant, 3 to 5 minutes.
2. Add half of the ground turkey and cook, breaking up meat, until no longer pink and just beginning to brown, 3 to 5 minutes. Stir in tomatoes and their juice, tomato sauce, and beans and bring to simmer. Cover, reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 30 minutes.
3. Pat remaining ground turkey together into ball, then pinch off teaspoon-size pieces and stir into chili. Add lime juice. Simmer, uncovered, stirring occasionally, until turkey is tender and chili is slightly thickened, about 30 minutes.
TIPS
- use 93% ground turkey
- make sure it’s ground turkey and not ground turkey breast
- serve with garlic bread

I absolutely adore making turkey chili, especially on a chilly evening when you crave something warm, hearty, and packed with flavor. While the core TURKEY CHILI Recipe is a fantastic starting point, I've picked up a few personal tricks over time that really make it sing and address some of the questions I often hear, like 'how to season ground turkey for chili' to perfection, or even how to incorporate ingredients like chickpeas. First off, the secret to a truly flavorful turkey chili often lies in how you treat your ground turkey and spices. Don't just cook the turkey until it's no longer pink; let it get a nice, golden-brown sear. That caramelization adds a deep, savory foundation to your chili that you won't get otherwise. And for the spices – don't be shy! Toasting your chili powder, cumin, and other dry spices in the hot oil for a minute before adding liquids really awakens their aromatic qualities. Sometimes, I even add a tiny pinch of unsweetened cocoa powder or a splash of brewed coffee. Trust me, it doesn't make it taste like chocolate; instead, it deepens the color and adds an incredible richness and complexity that makes your chili taste like it's been simmering all day. A final squeeze of lime juice at the end, just before serving, can also surprisingly brighten all those savory notes. Many people ask about variations, and one of my favorites is adding chickpeas. They add a lovely texture and an extra boost of protein and fiber. If I'm using them, I usually drain and rinse a can of chickpeas and add them along with the kidney beans. They integrate beautifully and make the chili even more satisfying. You can also experiment with other beans like black beans, or throw in a handful of frozen corn or diced zucchini during the last 15 minutes of simmering for extra veggies and color. For those who love a bit more heat, a diced jalapeño or a pinch of chipotle powder can really kick things up a notch, giving you that truly flavorful turkey chili recipe you're dreaming of. When it comes to the nutritional aspect, especially for those mindful of 'calories in homemade chili with beans and ground turkey', using ground turkey is already a great step towards a leaner meal. To keep it even healthier, I load up on extra vegetables like bell peppers, onions, and even some shredded carrots. This adds volume and nutrients without significantly increasing the calorie count. Plus, homemade chili is usually much healthier than store-bought options because you control the ingredients. Finally, how you serve your chili can make all the difference! While garlic bread is a classic, I love offering a toppings bar. Think creamy avocado slices, a dollop of Greek yogurt (a healthier alternative to sour cream!), a sprinkle of fresh cilantro, diced red onions, or even some crushed corn chips for a bit of crunch. This makes each bowl unique and ensures everyone gets exactly what they crave. This TURKEY CHILI Recipe is also fantastic for meal prepping – it tastes even better the next day and freezes beautifully for quick weeknight dinners. It's truly a versatile and comforting dish that never disappoints!
