Social media doesn’t serve me anymore.📵
Hi everyone! I’d like to rant in this post. I’m sure some people can relate to this.
I downloaded TikTok back in 2018 when it was advertised as an app for cosplayers, it was such a different vibe from Musically and I personally loved it, you had to be there.
From 2018-2020, this app became my main source of inspiration for my art, I would see a TikTok that inspired me, and I would create something from it. Recently I’ve been missing that era of my life, I was constantly inspired, talking to people with similar interests and consuming content that *actually* fulfilled me as a person.
I don’t do that anymore, as real creative content has been suppressed by sensationalism and false narratives, i.e rage baiting, discreet brand deals EVERYWHERE, and scripted situations that claim to be real for views. We as consumers have seen it all.
It’s scary for me to think about just how many people are on these apps for several hours each day, I remember when 1 million likes on a post was astronomical, but now it’s regular. The scariest thing is, it’s not our fault.
I’m not looking for a worldly solution to this, I’m here to express how sick I am of addicting, mass produced content, with ai generated descriptions and engagement bait.
🌱This app is different, as it allows posters to express themselves freely and I feel that most people are very personal, I love advice and it feels more communal here.
Comment if you have any thoughts or a similar experience, I hope y’all are having a great week.💘

The nostalgia for authentic social media experiences is palpable, particularly for those who joined platforms in their earlier days, like TikTok. Originally a hub for creative expression, it has transformed over time, becoming saturated with misleading content and engagement tactics that prioritize numbers over quality. Users often find themselves overwhelmed by the barrage of advertising disguised as genuine content, leading to a sense of disillusionment. The pressure to generate viral content has increased, with creators feeling compelled to conform to trends that can detract from their original artistic visions. This phenomenon is not limited to TikTok, as similar issues persist across all major platforms, including Instagram and Snapchat. However, emerging apps like Lemon8 show promise in fostering genuine community connections and unfiltered self-expression. These platforms encourage users to share authentic experiences and advice, creating a more enriching environment. As users, it is essential to take stock of our relationships with social media and seek out spaces that prioritize creativity and community over commercialism. Finding new ways to express ourselves, connect with others, and support authentic content can help restore the joy and inspiration that social media once provided.
