What is HHFNC?
What is it?
It is a kind of breathing device that supplies oxygen at a high flow rate. It mixes air and oxygen, mixes heat and humidity appropriately before passing a small wire into our nose.
What functions?
• Provide oxygen concentrate: It can accurately adjust the level of oxygen concentration (FiO _ 2) from 21% to 100%.
• Reduce breathing force: The high speed of air into the nose helps "clear away" the carbon dioxide that is in the upper airway, making us less tired.
• Generating Mild Positive Pressure (PEEP): Keeps the alveoli in the lungs from collapsing, allowing better gas exchange
• Comfort: Unlike regular oxygen masks, because the air is warm and moist, keeping the nose from drying and irritating.
When to use?
It is often used in patients with acute respiratory failure or low blood oxygen levels, such as:
• Pneumonia
• COVID-19 patients with pulmonary symptoms
• Use before or after intubation to reinvigorate symptoms
