Last night, five former Ridglan Farms beagles officially arrived at Ruff Start Rescue and stepped into the next chapter of their lives. It may have been raining outside, but for these dogs, it was the beginning of something entirely new: safety, comfort, and freedom.
Right now, all five are settling into foster homes where they’ll have time to decompress, rest, and slowly learn how to simply be dogs. Things many dogs take for granted, such as soft beds, toys, couches, grass beneath their feet, affection, routines, and the quiet of a home, are all brand new experiences for them.
For years, these dogs were identified only by tattooed numbers: OYD3, JDE7, LQY0, YLQ2, OAY0
Those numbers may remain on their bodies forever, but we will make sure the life they came from does not define the future ahead of them.
We welcomed four females and one male through this incredible collaborative effort, and we are so grateful to our partners at Animal Humane Society and Beagle Freedom Project for helping make this rescue possible.
These sweet souls still have a long road ahead as they heal, adjust, and prepare for adoption someday, but now, that road finally leads somewhere hopeful.

Over time, these dogs learn to trust and embrace their new environments, often surprising their foster families with playful behavior and sweet personalities that were hidden beneath years of neglect. I remember fostering a rescue dog who had a similar past; initially shy and unsure, she gradually blossomed through consistency and care. This healing process is essential for dogs coming out of situations where they were seen only as numbers. The road to adoption may be long, but with dedicated foster support and community awareness, these beagles can look forward to forever homes full of hope and happiness. Ruff Start Rescue’s collaboration with organizations like the Animal Humane Society and Beagle Freedom Project has been instrumental in making such rescues possible. They not only save dogs but also educate the public about the immense reward of adopting rather than shopping. For anyone considering adoption, these stories emphasize the impact one can have by opening their home to a dog in need.
