I often get asked what it's like to have a Maine Coon, especially one as unique as my Rumor. When people see her at shows, their eyes often go straight to her paws! Yes, Rumor is a polydactyl Maine Coon, which definitely makes her an 'unorthodox kitten' in the best possible way. For those unfamiliar, polydactyly means she has extra toes, sometimes called 'mitten paws' or 'thumb cats.' It's a fascinating genetic trait, and while it's more common in Maine Coons than other breeds, it still makes each polydactyl cat incredibly special. It gives her paws a bit more presence, almost like she's wearing tiny snowshoes! Her unique calico fur, a beautiful blend of white, black, and orange, only adds to her distinctive charm. Bringing an 'unorthodox' kitten like Rumor to her first cat show was an adventure! You always hope they'll adapt well to new surroundings, but you never truly know until they're there. From the moment we set up her pink cat show pen with its colorful mat, Rumor was curious and relatively calm. She spent a lot of time observing everything, and yes, she did look up with a paw raised, almost as if she was waving to the judges! It's moments like these that make all the preparation worth it. Preparing a long-haired, unique kitten for a show is quite the process. Beyond the regular grooming – Maine Coons need consistent brushing to keep their magnificent coats tangle-free – it's also about socialization. We make sure Rumor is comfortable with being handled by strangers, used to new sounds, and not easily spooked by the hustle and bustle of a show hall. You want them to feel confident and happy, not stressed. Her naturally sweet and curious temperament, despite being a 'plump girl' at seven months, really shone through. It's truly a testament to her personality that she took it all in stride. One of the most thrilling parts was seeing her included in the finals. For a kitten at her very first show, that was a huge accomplishment! It felt amazing to see a purple TICA "BEST KITTEN" ribbon near her. It's not just about the ribbons, of course, but it's a wonderful validation of her unique qualities and lovely temperament. Judges appreciate the breed standards, but they also connect with the individual spirit of each cat. Having an 'unorthodox kitten' might sound like a challenge, but for me, it's been an absolute joy. Rumor truly embodies the spirit of the Maine Coon – intelligent, playful, and incredibly affectionate. Her extra toes haven't hindered her at all; if anything, they seem to add to her agility and grip! Every day with her is a delightful surprise, and I'm so excited for her journey, both in and out of the show ring. We're already looking forward to her next show this weekend, and who knows what other 'unorthodox' adventures await us!
