I recently spoke with Ali Nolan for Outside Online about a trend that frustrates runners everywhere: the "Zone 2" trap.

Many athletes are following generic heart rate formulas and finding themselves in a "soul-crushing" slow-paced struggle. The truth is, if you’re training based solely on a percentage of your max heart rate, you’re likely missing the mark.

Zone 2 is a metabolic state, not a heart rate state. It’s highly individualized and defined by your first lactate threshold (LT1).

That’s why new or returning athletes often find the prescribed 'slow' Zone 2 workouts extremely challenging at first—they haven’t yet developed the metabolic pathways to sustain this effort. To truly benefit from Zone 2 training, I had to shift focus away from just the heart rate numbers on my watch and pay attention to how my body felt and recovered. Incorporating variety in my training to build muscular and metabolic efficiency made a major difference. It turns the process from a guilt-inducing, slow slog into a smart investment in building a sustainable, efficient engine. Moreover, for runners frustrated by slow paces at their 'Zone 2' heart rates, it’s worth seeking testing to find your actual LT1 threshold or using advanced methods that don’t rely solely on generic formulas. Training this way feels more rewarding and scientifically sound, improving endurance and overall fitness without the mental drain. In summary, while heart rate monitors are valuable tools, understanding the deeper metabolic meaning of Zone 2 transforms your training approach—shifting from a one-size-fits-all number to a tailored plan that respects your individual fitness and physiology.
