Moreover, minor injuries, like pain in the second toes, started to accumulate as fatigue took its toll. One of the most demoralizing moments was spotting the finish line at mile 18 only to realize there were still 8 grueling miles ahead on a less scenic, downright ugly highway route. Along the course, the official marathon photo company and crowd bottlenecks near the finish further cluttered the experience, making the final stretch feel congested and less celebratory than expected.
