Mission Creek Cemetery-a real Indian burial ground

Mount Pleasant, Michigan, not unlike the whole United States, has a deep and often dark history when it comes to Native Americans. Mission Creek Cemetery is the burial ground for some of that history and also some of the Native Americans who were murdered in the name of colonization. The burial ground is just down the road from one of the infamous boarding schools and is the final resting place for many of the children who were senselessly killed. This cemetery is also the final resting place of Chief Shaw-Shaw-Waw-Na-Beece who was the Chief of the Saginaw Swan Creek and Black River Band of the Chippewa tribe. He signed the Treaty of 1855, which set aside land for him and his tribe, it was only a small portion of what they rightfully deserved. I know “the Indian burial ground” is often a trope in paranormal circles but let us not forget that these are real people who endured horrendous genocide at the hands of people who look a lot like me (and maybe you). Please be respectful of locations such as these and remember that the land where you currently reside probably rightfully belongs to Indigenous people.

... Read moreVisiting Mission Creek Cemetery, as I did, truly brought home the profound history of Native American tribes in Michigan. Seeing those weathered gravestones, some dating back to 1845, others to 1910, and even one for 'WIFE OF T.H. ASHMAN' from 1850, makes you wonder about the lives they lived and the rich cultures they held dear. While the cemetery itself is a poignant historical marker, it also sparked my curiosity about the deeper cultural expressions of these tribes. The original article touches upon the Saginaw Swan Creek and Black River Band of the Chippewa tribe. When people search for 'creek tribe symbols,' they might be thinking about the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, which is distinct. However, learning about the Anishinaabe (Ojibwe/Chippewa) people, whose ancestors rest at places like Mission Creek, reveals a world equally rich in symbolism and meaning. It made me realize how much history is embedded not just in the land, but in their cultural narratives. The Anishinaabe, often referred to as the Chippewa, have a deep connection to nature and their spiritual beliefs are often expressed through various symbols. For example, animal totems or spirit guides are incredibly important. Each clan, such as the Bear, Loon, or Crane, has specific responsibilities and characteristics, represented by their animal symbols. The Bear clan might be seen as protectors, while the Loon clan are leaders and healers. These aren't just pretty pictures; they represent a whole way of life, from governance to social structure. Beyond clan totems, you find symbols woven into storytelling, art, and ceremonies. The Dream Catcher, for instance, while popularized, has its roots in Anishinaabe culture, intended to protect sleeping children from bad dreams. The Thunderbird is a powerful spirit, often depicted in art, symbolizing power, protection, and the bringing of storms. Even the sacred Midewiwin scrolls, though not 'symbols' in the simple sense, contain pictographs and mnemonic devices that carry profound spiritual knowledge and teachings passed down through generations. Reflecting on these symbols while at Mission Creek Cemetery gave me a new perspective. It’s not just about dates on a historical marker or broken stone; it’s about the enduring spirit and identity of a people. The resilience and wisdom encoded in these symbols are a testament to the vibrant cultures that thrived and continue to thrive. It reinforces the importance of approaching these sacred sites with the utmost respect, understanding that every gravestone, every piece of land, holds a story far deeper than what meets the eye. It's a reminder that their legacy isn't just in the ground, but in the enduring symbols and traditions that connect them to their ancestors and future generations.
