... Read moreI often get asked what my absolute favorite cuisine is, and without a doubt, it's Haitian food! There's something incredibly soulful and comforting about our dishes that just transports me straight back home. If you've never had the pleasure of trying it, you are truly missing out on a vibrant explosion of flavors and textures. One of the first things you'll likely encounter, and a personal favorite, is griot – perfectly seasoned, tender pork that’s been boiled then fried until crispy on the outside. It's often served with a side of golden, sweet fried plantains (banann peze) and a tangy, spicy pickled cabbage slaw called pikliz. The combination is simply divine – the rich meat, the sweet plantains, and the refreshing kick of the pikliz create a symphony in every bite. I remember countless family gatherings where plates piled high with griot and plantains were the star! And speaking of fried delights, our fried chicken and fried fish are legendary. Whether it’s crispy chicken wings or a whole fried fish, they’re always seasoned to perfection, often with a blend of regional spices and a hint of lime. These are often accompanied by a hearty serving of rice, maybe even a baked dish, and a fresh, vibrant salad. I love how we incorporate fresh ingredients like cherry tomatoes, creamy avocado, and thinly sliced red onions into our salads, adding a wonderful contrast to the rich fried items. For seafood lovers, Haitian cuisine has so much to offer. Imagine a beautifully cooked whole fish or even a succulent whole lobster, often served with a mound of fluffy white rice and a rich, savory sauce that ties everything together. The freshness of the seafood, combined with our aromatic seasonings, makes for an unforgettable meal. And don't forget staples like breadfruit, which can be prepared in various delicious ways, adding another unique texture to our plates. Haitian food isn't just about the main courses; it's about the entire experience. It's the comforting aroma of rice and beans (diri ak pwa) simmering on the stove, the warmth of a pumpkin soup (soup joumou) on a cold day, and the joy of sharing these meals with loved ones. Every dish tells a story, rooted in our history and culture. Exploring Haitian cuisine is like taking a flavorful journey through the heart of the Caribbean. Trust me, once you try it, you’ll understand why Haitians, and foodies everywhere, truly cherish our incredible food.
